Spent a wonderful 5 days here with my family. Small park with only 15-16 sites that are all level, large, and fairly private. We stayed at site 15. Very private, complete with deck overlooking a small creek that meanders from the back of the park to the front. Each site has full hookups and 30/50 amp power. All sites and roads are covered with gravel which keeps the park very clean, even in bad weather. During our stay we had several strong rain events and our site (and overall park) drained very well. The park is located in the town of Fries which is 15-20 minutes from Galax, Va. it is where the 50+ mile long New River Trail begins. Trail is relatively flat and runs alongside the beautiful New River. The park owner is extremely nice and helpful. He developed the park and obviously takes great pride in his work. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small park owned and managed by one of the friendliest and helpful hosts I've run across. The park is very quiet. The spaces are all large and easily accessible even with larger rigs. The sites are gravel as are the roads. The wifi was excellent but Verizon cell coverage here is pretty poor. Access to the New River Trail State Park is nearby and you can jump on the trail in a number locations very convenient to the park.
This owner obviously prides himself in the park looking nice, neat and clean. The restroom/shower was spotless. Would definitely stay again. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Not much going on in Fries itself other than easy access to the New River Trail. Only shopping in Fries was at Dollar General so come well stocked or make the 20 min. drive to Galax where there is a lot of shopping, eating, etc. In fact the Galax Smokehouse has excellent brisket.

This campground is lovely, clean, quiet and well kept. The owner goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome. He even helped us set up and arrived at 6:30 AM to help us hook back up when we left as he knew we were not very familiar with the process.

The two private baths are spacious and spotless. The fact that the campground is in the "holler" seems to keep it a bit cooler than the surrounding area in the summer.

We loved the campground, Fries, the New River Trail and the old time music. A great place to get away from the rat race!

Note: If you stay in site #7 it is like having your own private restroom/shower. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a great little deli just out of town at the bridge which has quite an extensive menu, great prices and fun people. We liked it better than the cafe in town.

Sharing the building with the deli is a bike/kayak/tube rental place that we rented kayaks from. They also sell fishing licenses.

Great small park with wonderful owners. Lots to do in the area. Camped in a 45 foot motorhome. Suggest you call the owners, when you get near to get specific directions. We also disconnect our toad in Galax with the toad preceding the RV talking radios to make sure traffic is clear at the curves.

Verizon cell phone service is not good. You can activate WiFi on your smart phone using the parks WiFi to make and receive calls.

Attend the Fries jam on Thursday nights in the town recreation buildings for a great taste of old timey and mountain music. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed for almost a week and overall, had a wonderful and relaxing time. It's about 20 miles off I-77, nestled in a 'holler' across from New River State Park and trail, surrounded by tall trees. The owner was great, always available and took obvious care of his park. Sites are hard packed pea gravel, fairly level with conveniently located hookups. There's a lot of privacy between sites. It's very quiet at night. Most sites are pull-thrus but a couple were pull-ins. Wifi was great. To get cable, you have to pick up a box from the office.

The park is missing a few amenities - no dog park, no laundry facilities, no pool, no playground, no fire ring. You can rent bikes at the office and the New River Trail is right across the street. The park is not easy to get to, especially if you have a big rig. But the park itself is big rig friendly. Just be sure to follow the directions EXACTLY as written on the website. Also, no credit cards accepted. You make a deposit via PayPal and pay the rest in cash when you arrive. Still, this is a gem of a park and we will certainly return. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

We are repeat visitors to this campground and always enjoy our stay. The owners work hard to create a sense of community among the campers which makes our time there always a pleasant experience and we always drive away with names and addresses of new friends we have met. We stayed in site 16, one of the new sites at the top of the hill. It is a very private site and worked well for us because we could set up an xpen for our small dogs in the grassy area. The campground is manicured like a high end resort and continues to improve each time we are there. We will return, just one of those places you go back to. What a unique park! Nestled in a "holler," the owners have created an oasis for RV'ers. We had site 4, up a hill in the "balcony." The sites are large, well maintained, and secure. There is a garbage can at each site. The owner has just added two more sites and has plans for a laundry room. We had a truck issue and our dog had some mysterious transient illness. The owner gave us good referrals for both. Our original reservation was for a week but we kept extending and left at sixteen days! Can't wait to return. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of our very favorite campgrounds bar none. Super friendly hard working owner and a warm welcome including the best muffins ever! Very nice sites with great hookups. Spotless restrooms. Bike rentals if you want them. We will continue to return to this campground in the future. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice small campground with very nice and helpful owner. The cable TV is a problem as they have to come to your site and hook it up. The Wi-Fi worked well. Fries is a very small town with a nice town park along the river. The only real attraction is the New River Trail which less than 1/2 mile away. It is for walking, bicycles and horses. It is a mostly level trail that follows the new river down stream. Returning up stream is not difficult though. As it was October, the canoe outfitters were closed except on the weekends. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a cozy park located in the small town of Fries Virginia. The park is clean, quiet and cozy. The owners are extremely hospitable and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Located near the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is a great spot for motorcycling riding (us), bicycling and hiking in a beautiful area. They have some sites open year around. We highly recommend staying there. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

Follow directions to park as detailed on park's website. We disconnected tow car in Galax and used 2 way radio with tow car as pilot car. Cell service (Verizon) is very weak. Park free internet is outstanding. We've stayed in sites 11 and 14 with no problems getting DirecTV. Sites are wonderful as well as the owners. Stream runs by each site. Interior road and sites are gravel with outstanding landscaping. Great shade morning and mid to late afternoon. Lot of things to do in Fries and near by Galax. We loved this campground. Small, but beautifully contoured up a little valley right in the small town of Fries. The owner is charming and the CG is his baby! Friends had recommended this place. If you like Bluegrass, it's close to the Crooked Road area of Virginia. Sites are covered in pea gravel and are level. Fully intend to camp here again. This is an awesome RV Park. The owners are friendly and helpful. The sites are large and very well maintained. The park is always clean and very well maintained. This park is not one of the biggest parks, but it is without a doubt one of the best RV parks - anywhere. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is an excellent park. The drive to the park must be carefully driven, if you have a long RV. We camped in a 45 foot motor home towing a car. Follow the directions on their website to the letter. We would suggest to disconnect a towed vehicle in nearby Galax, if driving a long motor home. The owner's are wonderful. The park is beautifully located in a hollow. Nice fog in the morning burning off later. Shade is enjoyed for most of the day because the park is located in a hollow. Sat TV was not a problem. Included WiFi and digital cable TV worked well. Verizon cell was weak or non-existent. Park is very quiet except for the babbling creek right next to your site and occasional dogs barking in the distance. Fries is in the middle of bluegrass and old time music. Take advantage of it and the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

Why can't all be like this? Because then this place wouldn't be special. If you read the other reviews you already know the owners are great, the place is manicured and clean, it is very quiet (and I am a musician so I am not a quiet freak) and we have a a true babbling brook next to our bedroom window. Our site was 11 and in this area the RVs are parked nose to rear so you never have a neighbor outside your window. We had turkeys in our picnic area the first morning we woke up. We are full-timers, but I still work from "home" and Internet is business critical. The wi-fi smokes. This is better than any park we visited. Our Dish satellite system works fine and I was told Direct TV works, as well. My company AT&T phone does not work, but our Verizon iPhones work with occasional dropped calls. Still not enough to lower the 5 star rating. While we have stayed many places before, this is only our 2nd stay since full-timing. We are doing month long stays in order to accommodate my business needs. Today was the first time we agreed we are happy with life on what we call our Magical Mystery Tour. We will always return here when in the area. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.
