Date of Stay: August, 2012 - $28.00
Warning: Read all reviews. I will add to what was not stated. First a very narrow rough dirt road entrance in a bad spot in the highway. The 82 year old owner was rude and greedy. Wanted extra $3.00 For the towed. Once she found out our holding tanks were near full she refused to let us use her dump station. Said she had just had her septic pumped and didn't want it filled up again. Not to mention a strong odor of alcohol as we conversed. She did agree to give us a refund. We would not recommend this park to anyone. We camped at Gooney Creek in a Motorhome.
My wife and I have a small class C. We decided to stay here based on the review and the Web site. When we arrived we noticed garbage and leftover food all over a table outside the office, There was so much junk we had to walk around the patio to get to the office. On our way to the office an older lady came out of a trailer beside the office. We asked for a full hookup. She quoted $27 for a mostly grass pad. Then stated that it was a backin. I said ok, we will unhook the towed. She said in that case it would be an extra $3. I said no thanks and left. On our way out we looked at the sites. We are glad we passed this one by. We camped at Gooney Creek in a Motorhome.
So much potential...shaded sites, quiet stream. And then there was the nasty lady who runs the place and the trashy appearance of the campground itself. When we arrived there was one other camper already there. We were placed right next to them - no option for moving to a more secluded site. Owner/host never got out of her chair when we arrived. Never a friendly wave or 'hello'. Just give me your money - park over there. Campsite wasn't very level, filled with trash and cigarette butts. There was even a sign at the office encouraging campers to burn trash in the campfire. A bit of traffic noise but the deal breaker was the trash and host. We won't be back. We camped at Gooney Creek in a Truck Camper.
This is our family favorite place to go tent camp. Owned by a woman who is 81 years old. Wooded creek front campsites. Mostly good for tents although some small campers do go here. Bathrooms are fine but not great. We bring our own soap because she doesn't supply it. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. The creek is great fun for whole family. Shallow spots for getting your feet wet & there is a swimming hole with a rope swing. When we were just there we saw a black bear. It was scary and exciting. We take our rafts and boats so we can float around in the deep area. If you like to hike she has a great area to explore. If you follow the creek upstream a couple of miles they have a beautiful lagoon and waterfall to enjoy in privacy. It's not a clear path because not many people venture up that far but if you do it's highly impressive. Really close to local Front Royal Canoe Co for canoe, raft & tube retals on the Shenandoah River. You can take all day trips or half day. This is known as canoe capital of east coast. If you can put up with the bathrooms you will love this place. We camped at Gooney Creek in a Tent.
