We chose this campground for proximity to Skylar and Appomattox. The park is set way back (7 miles) from the main road. This makes for a very quiet setting. Our site (Red Oak #15) was a very long pull through and was directly across from the bathhouse. The bathhouse is newer and of the same design as Natural Tunnel State Park in Duffield VA (women's and men's restrooms, 4 showers including one handicap accessible and laundry area. Very clean and well kept, great showers! Laundry contained 2 sets of washers/dryers, $1.00 per load. We were close to the camp host site which is where firewood was available ($6 per bundle). The camp hosts were very friendly and joined us at our camp fire one evening. No digital channels available on TV, no wifi and no AT&T cell reception. We weren't quite prepared for total tech-free. Park ranger was very visible and made frequent rounds. Make sure you are gassed up and have all staples and supplies before heading in. The area is very remote. No AT&T cell coverage though the camp host mentioned a strong Verizon signal. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

Hidden jewel, not close to any major interstates. Road leading to park entrance is not very wide, so take care. Worth it once you get there, though. Just about the cleanest park I've ever stayed in. Red Oak campground for the RV's has spacious sites, some pull-throughs, and good shade. Nice laundry room in restroom building. Lots of trails and in-season activities, including boat and tube rentals down by the river (which is a short drive from the RV campground). Verizon signal on the weak side but do-able. Got a few local OTA TV stations. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are counting on renting kayaks or tubes at the park's riverfront livery, be sure to call ahead to check on river conditions. They are only permitted to rent and to assist in transporting people from take-off and landing points if the river flow is below a certain number of gallons/second.

The only possible improvement might be a pool (and sewer on sites), but sites are large, private and fairly level, Park staff are friendly and knowledgeable, other campers were for the most part considerate. Rangers patrol frequently (which I like). We're absolutely going back! We camped at James River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Peaceful campground on the James River. We spent a weekend to go hiking and rent a canoe for a 6 mile trip down the James River. This park offers a lot of trails for hiking, 3 ponds for fishing and canoe, kayak, tube rentals. For camping it has 2 primitive campgrounds (one on a pond the other on the river), 1 RV campground (water and electric only) were we stayed and a horse campground.

Our site was mostly shaded and most all the sites were separated and private. Thin woods between each site. We had a great time and will go back again. We camped at James River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stay here at least two times per year-the first trip of the season and the last with sometimes a couple thrown in during the summer. It is a great campground with roomy wooded sites and excellent restrooms/showers. We camped at James River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is another example of the high quality of Virginia State Parks. The Park is clean and well maintained. The park host was friendly and very helpful coordinating a quick repair to the site 50 amp breaker with park maintenance. The bathrooms were spotless with modern toilet facilities including a laundromat. There is a new visitor center with daily activities. Pull through sites and back-in sites with 50/30/20 amp service are available. Dump station is located at the park entrance with easy access. We had no problem navigating our 38 foot MH through the access roads and park roads. There is no WiFI, no TV reception and could not get satellite reception. Verizon had 2 bars. The main attraction is James River access that offers fishing, kayaking and boating. The park has excellent access with boat ramp. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

We found this park to be nice but isolated. The park has a number of walking/biking/horse trails but during the week we were there it rained and the trails were muddy. There is a nice Visitor Center in the park. With recent rains the James River was running too swiftly for any canoe/kayak activity which is available in the park. Most sites are shady and would have trouble with a roof top satellite dish. We were able to get one of the sites that opened to the south and were able to connect to DirecTV. No over the air channels. No AT&T service in the park. One of the park hosts told us that Verizon had limited service inside the park. Definitely a back to nature location. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

This park is a fairly new park and all utilities worked well. There are no reservations so you pick your site when you get there. We were disappointed that it is about 20 miles away from anything. You are truly in the middle of nowhere. It rained most the time we were there but the drainage was good. They have a Visitor Center that was nice. The laundry was very clean and I think it was 1.25/load. There are lots of trees but we were able to get our satellite dish where we could get a signal. No AT&T and we have a Verizon MIFI that had minimal coverage. We were the only ones in the park for most of the week we were there. If you want to go to the river, you about have to walk as it is quite a ways away from the campground. Would like to rate this place higher, but with the price and being in the middle of nowhere we probably won't return. We camped at James River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Beautiful state park that is located near Appomattox Courthouse National Park. The road in is narrow and has some low hanging branches which required a bit of 'defensive' driving! Sites are not assigned ahead of time so you get to choose from those that are available. All sites are good sized and will accommodate any sized rig - disregard the size limit information on the park web site. We took advantage of the canoe/kayak rentals in the park and enjoyed a very nice paddle down the James River. We would stay here again. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here with a dog, so the rate reflects a $5 pet fee. Used this as a shakedown trip for a new camper. Wonderful sites with plenty of room. From front bumper of truck to rear bumper of trailer we are almost 50' long, still more room left in spot. Good hiking trails. Good bath house, seemed to be a newer campground. We camped at James River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of our favorite spots. Rate includes a 10% Va Park pass discount but $5.50 for one dog. Red Oak campground is about 4 yrs old with large (mostly level) sites and gravel is starting to show it needs maintenance. Bathrooms are very clean, with large individual showers. Great spot to spend a few days, be sure to get reservations on the weekend. JRSP no longer assigns campsites, but you pick when you arrive, as is done in the rest of the VA state parks. Looks like the equestrian campground with hookups will be open next year. Great walking trails. Good place for dog to swim in river. We camped at James River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This campground has become one of our favorite places to camp. It is located in the foothills with a beautiful countryside, and the James River is very clear and clean. The park rents canoes and kayaks and has a shuttle that will drop you off 6 miles upstream, and you can float back to the Park's canoe livery and get out. We have our own kayaks and for a small fee they even transported our equipment via their shuttle. There is only one camping loop (RedOak) with power and water hookups, and those sites have plenty of wooded space between them. Only the tent campers can camp right on the river in the primitive sites. The bathrooms and showers in this campground are the cleanest of any campground we have been in. We camped at James River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful park We stayed in the Red Oak camping area in sites 1 & 2. Large sites with plenty of shade and room to move around. Visited the bath houses although we didn't use them, very clean. Great place to ride the bicycles and take the canoe trip down the James River. We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a GEM in the crown of the award winning Virginia State Parks. We had a group of 7 coaches of the Cardinal Winnies and ALL considered this one of the best and most enjoyable CGs we have visited. Phone service is almost nil. But with a CG such as this one, you forget about the cell service and tend to relax a lot more. Enjoy !! We camped at James River State Park in a Motorhome.
