Overall Rating:

We spent 4 nights at this park in the Burson section, electric and water only for 41.27 a night, (way too expensive for what you get) no discount given. Dump station is at the entrance before the park store entrance, so you will need to go back out to the road and enter there for dumping. You can pick a site online (extra $) or just take chance with non-specific sites. All the sites looked great, so save your self some $ and wait until you arrive to pick one. The map shows a water source behind us like a stream, no, just tall weeds. There are a few walking/bike trails right off the park, they were nicely placed. The laundry room had a big sink for hand washing clothes, 2 washers and dryers. Outside the bathroom is a sink for doing dishes with hot water. CONS: dogs left in RVs barking, employee was spraying around the RVs and in the lots with out any notification for pets or children the dangers. You could smell the chemical as it was a windy day. The road noise is constant as you are right on it. PROS: Saw deer, trails are close and a lake is close to walk around. Bathrooms were clean. Laundry room was wonderful with the large sink. I would not stay again as its too expensive for non residents, thought a 62+ or military discount would apply, my mistake. was told by the employee that checked us in to write it in the survey as they have had complaints about it. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Hungry Mother is a wonderful state park with many recreational opportunities - hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling, etc. We stayed at Burson campground, which is a mile before the main part of the park. It is a large, flat CG with a variety of hook-ups and 2 yurts. We found it very comfortable, with friendly rangers and camp hosts. The CG itself is not very interesting but the location is ideal for exploring the area. There are a couple of other CGs in Hungry Mother but we were told that Burson is better for larger RVs. The cost is discounted if you are a Virginia resident. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful park and very nice campground. Stayed at Camp Burson, which is more accessible for bigger RVs. Nearby hiking trails include one around the lake and another (across rt.16) that climbs a ridge. Camp Burson is just downstream from the dam. Sites are level and most are quite spacious. There are about 10 pull-through sites. Campground staff and hosts are very welcoming and helpful.

Creekside campground is up in the main part of the park, but is definitely not big-rig friendly. The road to it is narrow and contains a hair-raising hairpin curve. The biggest downside to the park is not the park's fault. It is a problem with Virginia state parks. They charge a transaction fee on top of the normal nightly fee, even for walk-ins. They charge non-residents an extra $4.00/night. And they have something called "site-specific" sites, which cost an extra $3.00 per night if you pick one (the non-site-specific sites are first-come, first-serve). That adds up to $40 or more for one night of E/W hookup (you can add another $4 for sewer). We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park offers a variety of organized activities on weekends, including nature walks, informational talks, canoe/kayak tours, etc. The trails are for walking and/or biking and are kept in really good shape. The lakeside trail from Camp Burson to the swimming beach in the main park is a little over a mile long, but mostly level (except for by the dam's spillway). Great place to come with kids.

Overall Rating:

My RV is a class B so Creekside is great because I didn't have to move. Dump station at check in location. Walk-ins are allowed after 4 pm but ONLY for the non-site specific spaces. The sites are paved but not necessarily level. The two rows closest to the creek get the most shade. No vehicles over 35'. Laundry room. Ice and firewood available from host. Host and park employees very friendly.

Lots to do in the park, hiking (great trails), biking, swimming, paddle boat and kayaking. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We arrived late afternoon after finding Hungry Mother on internet. Just stayed for one night due to being enroute to destination. Would have enjoyed a longer stay. This is a beautiful park on a lake nestled among the mountains. Though we didn't go, there is a beach, and a restaurant. Tried to go to the restaurant for breakfast, but it was closed on Wednesday morning. I understand there is a nice Sunday brunch. There are two camping sections, the Hungry Mother original park and Camp Burson, which was added to the park. Not being familiar with the park, we chose the HM park area. The road into this campground was narrow, winding, and had drop offs. Fortunately, we didn't meet anyone on a curve in the RV. Next time, we will choose Camp Burson. Our site was a backin next to a beautiful stream. Enjoyed watching a family of ducks on the stream. Could not get satellite due to heavy shade from trees though there were two empty pull thrus that would have worked. Our AT&T cell service would not pick up a signal either. Would like to return sometime for a longer stay. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed the visit to this campground but fee too high. Spaces were adequate and staff was very friendly. Lots of different types of camping here, ranging from tents to motor homes. Out AT&T cell phones had no service but we were told Verizon usually worked. WiFi was very weak and not usable. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

$36 per night was for a mostly level but narrow asphalt pad pull-though site (#24) with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer in the Camp Burson campground. The reservation web site doesn't show sites for 40'+ RVs but the sites in Camp Burson are long enough to accommodate most any length RV. There are large trees throughout the campground and some sites might be challenging to set up on-watch your slides, awning, and basement compartment clearances-but it's doable. All sites have a wooden picnic table and fire ring. Enter the campground at the campground office driveway, not the first driveway to the campground as that access is quite steep. It was pleasantly quiet during my stay, even over the weekend when families arrived. The campground office was unmanned when I arrived but the campground host came by shortly after my arrival to give me my permits as well as information about the park including maps of the trails. The campground host was friendly and helpful. There are many activities available, which you can find listed on their website as well as in the brochures they give you. The campground is about five miles outside Marion where most any amenity is available. AT&T and Verizon cell signals were low but usable. Staying in Camp Burson includes free Wi-Fi, which I did not use. I received six digital over-the-air TV stations and many radio stations. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

$42 per night was for a level but narrow asphalt pad pull-though site with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Our site, #28 in the Camp Burson campground, did have a large tree on the street side that was close to the pad so it took a little maneuvering to get situated on the site so we could extend the slides and awning plus open the basement compartments. There are large trees throughout the campground and some sites are totally in the shade at all times. The site has a wooden picnic table and fire ring. Enter the campground at the campground office driveway, not the first driveway to the campground as that access is quite steep. It was pleasantly quiet during our stay, even over the weekend when many families arrived. The campground office was unmanned when we arrived but the campground host came by shortly after our arrival to give us our permits as well as information about the park including maps of the trails. The campground host, park manager, and a park volunteer were all friendly and helpful. We camped at Camp Burson, which is before the entrance to Hungry Mother State Park. The section with full hooks is old and narrow and very difficult to park a big rig in. The newer section only has water and electric. Park is very clean. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice park - only about 5 miles from I-81, and the route to the park goes by a WalMart and grocery store if you need supplies. We stayed at Camp Burson, the campground with full hookups, although we had to drive down the road to the main park to check in, probably because it was midweek. Camp Burson is connected to the trail system that goes around the lake, so it isn't that separate. Sites seemed pretty level and nicely shaded. We were in Class B, but there were large 5th wheels & trailers in the pull-through sites. Bathrooms were clean, as were the 4 individual shower rooms serving the campground. Firewood was available from the camp host for $5 a bundle. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Campground loop B was a little worrisome getting to in a 32 foot RV because the roads are tight and have hairpin turns. I disconnected the tow car and had it driven ahead of our motorhome so I could be informed of any cars ahead. Once into the loop it was tight maneuvering again. We did get a site right next to a stream that made it all worth it. Unfortunately, a camper at the end of the loop had two dogs that they let roam the campground and no one cleaned up after them! Other than that it was very peaceful and I would camp there again. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed in Camp Burson section where there are pull-throughs and full hookups. Site was nicely shaded but very unlevel, front to back. Water pressure was the lowest we have seen in 5 years of fulltiming. Free Wi-Fi was one of the best we have seen. Park was very quiet. No TV without a satellite dish. We paid an average of $32/night, including a $5/night dog fee that stopped after three nights. Strange, but that way they can be sure to sock it to the weekenders. We've camped here several times and have always enjoyed it. Nice hiking trails, good spacing between sites, and excellent new bathroom facilities with nice one-person shower rooms. Price shown includes the extra $5 charge for the first night you register, so longer stays would be less expensive, but we used this just as an overnight.
