This was an overnight for us when traveling south and then again when traveling north. Only a half mile or so off I-95 at exit 41, we found the campground perfect for our needs (22' TT and f350). We stayed in two sites, B9 and A8 I think. Sites were somewhat level (nothing a 2x6 wouldn't cure) and average in size. Staff were accommodating and suggested alternate sites that were available. Water pressure, wifi and TV were adequate. We ate at the little restaurant out front the first night and it was a welcome sight so I didn't have to cook! I'm not sure how the campground, rates or amenities compare to others in the area, but for a brief quiet nights sleep it was ideal. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Nice, convienient right off of I95. A bit tricky to level, but not a concern for us. Cable & wifi worked well. Pool looked neglected, could not use it. We would stop here again. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

South 40 RV Park is a good place to stay for someone traveling through. It is close to I-95, and easy to get to from exit 41. We have stayed before, but we were not even set up and there was a guy trying to sell something to us. He said he had permission from the park, however, I wonder about that. Just up RT. 301 is shopping, and many restaurants. The facilities are old, but, clean and well kept. The water is good but had real low water pressure. The wifi is strong and fairly fast. They take AAA, and Good Sams. Probably won't stay here again. Too much money for a mediocre site. The sites are gravel/grass The roads are gravel, and for the most part pretty smooth. The laundry is clean, as are the restrooms/ showers. Our site had full hookup, but was not very level. The dump station is in back of the office and relatively easy to get to. The office personnel are friendly and helpful. They sell Propane. There is a quaint little restaurant within walking distance and they give a 10% discount to campers. It is fairly quiet, and peaceful. I heard a train far away, and some traffic noise at night, but it was not disturbing at all. Bottom Line. Ok, but we will not stay there again. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The hook ups were centrally located. The sites were level. the wifi was not very good at the site, but the cable was fine. It is a very easy on/off from the interstate. The cost is quite high for the quality of the park. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Wooded, quiet, well maintained park with gravel interior roads and gravel/grass sites. Short term spaces at the front were sloped uphill. Cable had good and bad channels. Wifi was good when able to connect, but slow in evening hours. Good dog walking areas. Toilets were old and needed maintenance (rust, peeling paint, etc.), but clean; showers had mildewed curtains, rust and peeling paint. Would stay again. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We actually left the rv here for 3 weeks while we went on vacation. The staff looked after everything and we had a very good experience before we left and when we returned. This is the second time we stayed at this facility and have been very happy. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here in a 36' 5th wheel w/3 slides and a F-350 DRW truck. Gravel, FHU, pull-thru site was adequate size for both vehicles with good space between campsites. Interior roads are dirt and somewhat narrow but we were able to navigate and park with no problems. Picnic table and fire ring at sites. Did not use the restrooms/showers but the ladies room appeared clean. Decent laundry room. Most sites are heavily wooded. Our site (#A-9) had good reception for DirecTV roof mounted satellite and Verizon WiFi and cell phone. Did not use park cable or WiFi. Close to I-95; park was quiet with very little traffic noise. We would stay here again when in the area. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There is some Civil War history near Petersburg, and it is a nice little city with many restaurants and shops. Rt. 301, (Crater Road) goes right through downtown, and is a pretty drive, even though the road itself needs some repair. (It is pretty rough in some places). We had a very enjoyable day visiting attractions.

Overall Rating:

We were looking for a quick 2-night stop near Richmond as we traveled through the area. Based on other reviews, we had prepared ourselves for the worst. In fact, it's those reviews that encourage me to write this review. This place isn't as bad as it's made out to be- in fact, I kind of like it here. Staff can make or break a place; the staff here has been super friendly and welcoming.

We are in A-8 which is the first row in the park. It's a 50-amp spot and a 70' pull-through site. We have a beautiful shade tree (which is trimmed nicely back so that it doesn't brush our camper). Side to side, the site is fairly level. Front to back is sloped pretty heavily to the rear- we can manage it in a trailer (42' fifth wheel), but I could see this being an issue with some motorhomes. Though, we have had motorhome neighbors on either side of us coming and going. My other complaint for the campsite, is the number of ant hills around it. We carry and sprayed bug killer as we setup and haven't had issues (thanks FL for that lesson). Our picnic table seemed to be freshly painted and was in good repair. Their wifi worked, but was slow. Verizon and AT&T service are good. We hear some highway noise when outside, but not bad. There have been little flashes of power going off; just for a moment each time (resets clocks). Water pressure is good.

These front sites are well kept, mowed, and utilities are about midway. The lake IS overgrown with lily pads, but it looks pretty. The back sites seem pretty cozy and are mostly filled with seasonal/annual residents but they're generally well kept. There are a set of sites under the trees that could be really nice. Part of it is storage with some very dilapidated units. And then there seem to be some not so well marked sites. There are a few cabins that looked well-kept from the outside.

Each day that we've been here, we have noticed them doing something. The last couple of days, it has been painting picnic tables and office. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The campground is a great jumping off point for exploring the Battle of Petersburg: a 9 1/2 month slog just prior to the end of the civil war. The battlefield Visitors Center is quaint but nice and the movie they show is really well done.

This is a decent RV park. They do have shaded lots, which is a huge plus. They have ample laundry facilities and a nice pool. There is no pavement, which makes it hard to walk your dog after a rain and them not get dirty. It's in a decent location (about 15 minutes from shopping and the gym). We chose to stay there because it's close to where my husband was working. There is an awesome Mexican restaurant a few exits up (towards Colonial Heights) which is fantastic! The speed limit is strictly enforced - 5 mph. The only thing I didn't like was the low water pressure and the WiFi signal wasn't strong even with a range extender. Other than that it's a quiet RV park in a safe area. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Dingy campground. Overnighters were all placed in the front of the park, in the open. No trees, no privacy. One of the reasons we stayed was for the "Italian" restaurant within walking distance. The restaurant was terrible. Their pizza oven was broken so there was only some sketchy italian meals available. Stay away from the chicken marsala - it was really bad. A forgettable campground, a regrettable meal. Pass this one by. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Very nice staff. The site was on a slight grade and even with automatic level, my RV could not level without blocks. The site is composed of washed out rock and grass. The plus is that it is just off I-95. The negative is that the place is unkempt and seriously overpriced. Next time, I'll drive right past this place and get a better value for my money. Overnite stay while traveling to New England. This appears to be an old KOA. ATT cell service marginal. Verizon non-existent. Site was reasonably level but you're on top of your neighbor. Roads and sites are gravel. Nice grass fields in the area. Check in was quick and friendly. No guide to the site. Since our stay here, we found a really nice CG just south of the Virginia/NC border in Roanoke Rapids where we will stay in the future. We camped at South Forty Campground in a Travel Trailer.
