A great new state park. Sites were large and well laid out. Lots of trails and access to James River. Trails were for walking, bike riding or ride your horse. Lots of stores and places to eat with in ten miles. Really nice dump station, can handle up to four RVs at the same time. We camped at Powhatan State Park in a Motorhome.

The campground is fantastic! The sites are large with lots of space between spots. Our spot (site 6) was relatively level, and we didn't have to use levelers - which is rare. It looked like some of the other spots might have a bit more slope to them, but given the size, you could probably readily find a "sweet spot" for getting level. We didn't use the bathhouse, but the accommodations looked good from the outside. There was even a laundry!!! We look forward to returning someday to do some hiking and check out more of the state park itself. We camped at Powhatan State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

There is a LOT to like about this park, but it isn't quite for us. First, the good stuff: the park is in great shape and is well designed, very clean, and staffed with great rangers and camp hosts. However, the park just doesn't seem, as one ranger put it, fully broken in. It feels like a brand new park, which it is, but it doesn't feel like one that's ready for prime time. It's just too new, too open, and not grown-up enough. We love ALL Virginia State Parks, and may come back to this one again because it's convenient to home, but it won't be our favorite. In a few years, once things have grown up a bit, that will likely change. The only true negative (the rest of this is our preference) was the bath house water temperature. It never got above lukewarm. One tip: In most Virginia State Parks, the best campsites are the site-specific reservation sites. That is NOT the case with this park. All of the campsites are huge, and most of them could accommodate the biggest rigs out there. We weren't fond of our site (nothing wrong with it - just not our preferred location) but we stayed there because I booked it site-specific. The best sites, in our book, are 18-25. We camped at Powhatan State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

For a great sandwich, check out the Cafe at Maidens. It's about 10 minutes from the park and is *amazing*.

We stayed here because I wanted to be the 2nd person to review this place. I was not disappointed. As previously mentioned everything here is new. This park was established in 2013 and apparently has been riding below the radar since then. So it's with some reluctance I'm going to sing it's praises. Everything described is preceded with the word "NEW". Paved wide roads in the park and campground. Sites are gravel an pretty close to level, some more than others. We were in #10 and added 4.5" lift plus air bags to get level. Power 50,30,20amp with water hydrant at each site. Bathrooms showers are very nice, however the water pressure was OK and the temperature was warm but not hot. There's an on site host to answer your questions and a visitor center that is staffed during normal business hours. The park has about 12-15 miles of hiking trails depending on how you link them together, all but one are open to mountain bikes and all but two to horses. There are 3 canoe/kayak ramps to get down to the river. Most of the sites have a lot of shade and there are several pull through. The campground has 29 sites and as of the date of this 14 are reservable and the other 15 are 1st come 1st served. All the sites have water and power and are not very far from the bath/shower rooms. There are also 3 yurts. They have a nice four slot dump station but only have 2 water stations there. If was wanted to fill my fresh water tanks I'd advise doing it in the campground and not at the dump stations. Verizon phone and MiFi worked very well and there was no Wi-Fi available. Sorry I don't watch much TV and can't comment. We'd be delighted to stay here again if we are in the area. We camped at Powhatan State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

I found 2 small "farmhouse" breweries in the area and have limited days and open times but both worth the trip, be sure and check the day/hours they are open. This campground is quiet but not really close to anything.

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Powhatan State Park is relatively new, and as a result is a very nice place to camp. Literally, everything is new: New picnic table, new fire pit, new landscape timbers framing the driveway, new bathrooms, etc. It is pretty and in an area of forest. Most sites have a lot of trees, but there are a few that are mostly open. There were a lot of sites available when we visited. They let you choose your site, even if you made a reservation which we liked. The loop road is fresh asphalt and the sites are crushed gravel. There are several stairways down to the river with wooden chutes for sliding your canoe or kayak down to the water. Unfortunately, the banks of the river are very steep so the only place to access the river from the state park is on the stairs. This means no places for fishing, unless of course you do so from your canoe or kayak. We had good cell service and were able to get satellite reception from our roof mounted unit. There are some hiking trails, but the area is not too exciting for hiking really. Nice place to stay, fresh clean and new. Nice dump station. No sewer connections. We camped at Powhatan State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
