We stayed on site 13, a pull-through at the back of the campground. The campground was pretty hilly, but we had no trouble navigating it with our 26' trailer, nor in setting up on site. We found the campground to be very clean, quite attractive, and just overall very pleasant. The campground was mostly full on Saturday night, but it was fairly peaceful. For the next two nights after that, we had the campground to ourselves. There is one bath house, and it had two showers per side. They were adequate and clean. There is a dump station beside the bath house. The huge pool was a joy for our 11-year-old son. It was clean, and had a kiddie pool, picnic tables, lots of chairs, a concession stand, etc. Very nice pool for a state park. There is a lot of open space around the visitor's center, and this park is certified by the International Dark-Sky Association. This park is out away from any major towns (30 minute drive into South Boston), and apparently folks come from time to time to gaze at the stars and planets. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a small cafe just outside the park that is open 9-6 Thursday-Sunday. We only got ice cream, though. They have ice cream, hotdogs, hamburgers, fish, etc. South Boston is 30 minutes away, and there is some shopping and restaurants there.

Overall Rating:

Easy check in. We were here in mid April and there were only 2 other campers here. Sites are close together but made no difference. Sites are level and gravel. Lots of tent sites. Rigs > 37 feet would have trouble with the interior roads. Great hiking trails. Small gift shop. Park rangers very friendly and helpful. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park belongs to the International Dark Sky Association. We rented a telescope and enjoyed the night view free of interfering City lights. They have a nice pool but too early to use in April unless you're a polar bear. The River trail is pretty.

Really enjoyed my stay at this campground. Hiking is fantastic. Clean, well marked trails. I did over 9 miles in two days, and didn't near see it all. Run offs for low muddy spots the best I've seen. I used this trip to check out the Equestrian campground. Looks well set up. A little worried about no water on the trails for horses (bring a collapsible bucket). The camp hosts were the best. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. Even seen them in action when a camper cut themselves, and another with a boating accident. Gift shop was staffed with very helpful seasonal staff. Love the slanted back-ins, easy to get your rig into. Will go back. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Two rivers with landings are great for boats with motors, a little to big for fun Kayaking, fighting the current. Fishing looked excellent! Seen some really big fish come outta there!

Overall Rating:

We stayed here over the Thanksgiving Holiday; the rest of our family stayed in the cabins. The park is beautiful and of course very quiet during this time. The campground was well maintained but I will state that it's not really set up for a big rig. We are in a 43 ft motorcoach so it would have been very difficult to maneuver if the camp had been crowded but we were able to get a spot that was relatively level and had clearance. Turns are tight but if you can make it work, it's worth the effort. My family loved the cabins, the views are wonderful, deer everywhere and so quiet. I don't think I'd try this during the summer months but we all agreed that we'd do Thanksgiving there again for sure. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Motorhome.

We found a wonderful little restaurant in South Boston called Southern Plenty Café. The owner, a super nice lady, cooked all of the meals. We all had breakfast there the last day and would return there for lunch or dinner.

Overall Rating:

This is a very nice state park. The park attractions are about a half mile from the campground resulting in a quiet campground in an otherwise busy park. The only complaint we had was the difficulty getting our 5er into our pull through space. The sites are laid out with landscape timbers, and about 20 feet from the road the space had a 45° turn in an entrance that was about 10 feet wide. Getting in without puncturing a tire on the timbers was quite a task. Getting out posed the same problem as there was another timber sided turn to get out of the space. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Just outside the park boundary is a small cafe owned by Jeremy Jeffress, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, and run by his father. The food was great, and chatting with the locals was just a bonus!

This was our first time staying at Staunton River State Park so we decided to use the Memorial Day holiday weekend to try out the park. We got there at 3:30PM and was able to check-in to site #22. The park was completely full from locals which is a good sign that the locals like this park. The campground is laid out in a figure 8 loop with the bath house in the middle near the campground host. They offer firewood for $3 a bundle near the bath house and ice for $2 a bag at the visitor center. This campground is ideal for pop-ups but can be a bit tight for larger rigs unless you get one of the 3 pull-through sites. I have a 30ft travel trailer and it took me 4 times to get it get around the trees along site backing in at a 90 angle. If you take your time, then you'll have no problem getting your rig in the site. This park has an AWESOME Olympic size pool with water slides and a separate kiddy pool with lifeguards. Staying at the campground gets you free passes to the pool. Otherwise, it's cost money for the public to use. The park had scheduled events like S'mores, Campfire Cooking, Wagon Ride, Canoeing, Bee wax candle making, Geocaching and making homemade ice cream with the park staff. My kids love this park and asked "When are we coming back"! We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Motorhome.

This is another beautiful Virginia state park. Our sight was a long level pull through. There was a fair amount of shade. The park staff was friendly. We were here over the 75th birthday celebration and they had several events going on including night time fireworks. We will stay here again. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is one of the original six State Parks in Virginia. The campground is great. It is a little tight for bigger rigs, but take it easy and watch your mirrors and no problem. The sites are leveled with good gravel and have all the usual stuff. The pool is large and popular. The hiking trails are excellent and very well maintained. Hike, bike, or horseback are all allowed on the trails. Fishing and boating on the Dan River and Staunton River are popular activities. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a very nice and clean campground on Staunton River. Secured gate at nite. The largest swimming pool I have ever seen and very clean with life guards on duty. Also has a food bar to get a good lunch. Swimming is free to campers and they also have a day use for non campers. Park is big and has picnic areas and boating and fishing. Sites are clean and seperated by timbers in wooded area. Has water and electric hook-ups and a dump station. We will visit here again. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
