Very nice, quiet and clean park off Skyland Drive. Saw several deer wandering around campground. Buck was across from our campsite grazing on one morning. Bathrooms clean with hot/cold water and hand soap provided. Pay showers were clean and well maintained. Campground quiet in evening in spite of being full. Did have to level camper. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Big meadows area a great place for star viewing. Ate at Big meadows dining room, Wayside cafe, and New Market Taproom - all had good food and service. Several good hiking trails in area. Appalachian Trail runs by side of campground.

This national park campground has no hookups, but does have pay showers and a laundry facility which is very reasonably priced. We stayed in site A100 which was fairly level (many did not look level in the slightest) and we were able to get Directv from this site. Trees had very low branches, however, and when a storm came through in the middle of the night we had to actually leave the site early. These campgrounds really need to trim trees a little more often. There is a dump station down the road but we did not use it while camping here. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Top notch national park. Great campground. We 'dry camped' and only stayed one night. The hiking trails are great. The AT runs right through the park. Sky Line Drive is challenging for a big coach and a toad but certainly manageable. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Don't pass this one by Most recent stay was June 23rd thru June 26th 2017 We camp in a Little Rig "Tear Drop" style RV only 15' long w/o toilet or shower ~ plus we like to eat outdoors using the picnic table and set up our dining canopy for sun and weather protection and thus rely on condition of campgrounds facilities and being nearby our site ~ so our critique is focused in that area We had reservations [recommended] got close to the restroom with flush toilets, sinks with warm water but showers [private lockable rooms] were further away; the only one in camp at the entrance. They ran out of hot water every night due to full campground; bring extra quarters - in case you can't finish in allotted time. Each shower had bench and hooks for towel and clothes but no rubber mats to keep feet dry when toweling off. Modern cheery bright rooms with full tile walls and floors. Campsite B107 was a paved dry camp [no hookups] but potable water was close by. The sites are roomy, and private with wide grassy greenspaces between neighboring sites. Had nice shade trees all around to ward off summer heat, but still somewhat sunny Big Meadow is a great location for a base camp as you explore the park [its very large] to hike the many trails - including the Appalachian Trail which runs through it and be sure to visit the several visitors centers to gather more information of things to do. Don't miss driving Skyline Drive taking advantage of pulling off the side of the road at the many overlooks and don't miss the lodge. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

We paid $20 per night booking online. There was not a transaction fee. The online reservation system works well. I had to change our reservation after booking and the site performed correctly and generated a prompt refund to my credit card minus a $10 change fee. Check-in at the campground was easy and the staff was pleasant. There are no hook-ups. We had zero signal from Verizon cell or Verizon Mifi. We could not access DirecTV even though most trees were still without their Spring leaves. If you had a remote dish and the time, I imagine you could probably find a sat signal. We did find a few OTA stations. There is Verizon cell coverage if you walk to the Amphitheater. The Byrd Visitor center has wifi but it's slow and sketchy. The hot tip for communication purposes is Skyland Resort. Skyland has a set up very similar to Starbucks - coffee bar, espresso drinks, pastries, snacks, sandwiches and very nice service. They have big chairs in front of a fireplace, comfy couches and a long high-top table with a strip of power outlets down the middle. Their wifi was pretty good. Sadly we did not have good weather for most of our stay and were not able to enjoy the outdoors as much as we had hoped. Be prepared for cold, wet and foggy conditions and for sudden weather changes. We saw many deer but no bears. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The camp store is well-stocked with a variety of items you might need including drug-store type items, food products and clothing. The Byrd Visitor Center is well-designed with interactive displays plus 3 different films. The film about the CCC was interesting. There is a ranger presentation (with props) at 1pm each day which is great for a rainy day.

Not much to say except that if you want to get back to nature and the basics this is the place. No hook-ups , no Wi-Fi , no cable but plenty of peace and quiet. Very relaxing and refreshing from the daily hustle and bustle. Clean restrooms and showers. Some OTA television if you have a battery and inverter. Saw plenty of deer and bears and plenty of trails to hike. Sites are not very level and could use some gravel. Ours was a pull thru that was plenty long and wide. They do have a dump station about 1/2 mile from campground on the way out. Easy check in and out. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

We arrived mid-week during early season. told to drive through, find a site, put something or someone on it to hold it and come back to check-in to pay for it. Loops A&B do not permit generators, so we started with Loop C. I think A-E Loops are much newer than F-... as the site are much wider, and properly angled to the street for back in. Section F and on are pull-thous and seem to be placed a bit more hap hazardously. Our site had a picnic table which was chained to the ground so we couldn't move it which made us readjust our parking so we could have our stairs open out on to that section of the pad. There is also a fire ring with each site. Bathhouses have toilets and sinks and are throughout the park. Showers are located at the top of the hill near the main office and were $1.75 for a 5 minute shower (change machine just outside showers). Laundry was $1 each for washers and a quarter for 7 minutes in the dryer. Cell signal is very weak in the park and it's suggested you head towards the outdoor amphitheater to try to grab a signal from the towns in the valley. No hook ups and generator use is limited to 2 hrs in the morning and 3 at night. Tents have dedicated wooded areas with bear boxes as well as the option of taking an RV site. There is a dump station with potable water located between the turn off of Skyline Drive and the actual campground. Low season price is $17, peak season is $20. And 50% off for Senior Pass. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Truck Camper.

Arrived in the dark, site was easy enough to find though. Site was just barely long enough for our 22ft trailer and extended cab regular bed truck. This site offered a bit of buffer from neighboring sites which was great. Bathrooms were clean. Nice location for accessing different areas of the park. One dump station for the whole CG, could be a hassle on busy weekends. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

I stayed here two midweek nights to hike some trails on the 100th birthday of the NPS (August 25). The campground was not full, but reservation tags on the site posts implied that the campground would be full over the weekend. The campground was very orderly and quiet. I had brought a small generator but, not hearing any other generators, went without. Site was shallow and dropped down sharply but I was able to level the trailer by lowering the tongue substantially. I saw no big rigs and think many sites wouldn't be large enough. Wildlife abounds here; saw 4 bears up close in 2 days, and too many nearby deer in the campground to count. There are no hookups, no wi-fi, and my Verizon phone had no service. Single dump station for the entire campground. The fee shown reflects the 50% discount for the federal senior pass. I'd stay here again when in the area. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Hiking trails abound in the park; some prohibit pets, others allow them on a leash. Driving Skyline Drive is also enjoyable with many pullouts for views of the mountains and steep valleys. Speed limit is a leisurely 35 and there are zero passing zones, so allow time to get around.

Typical National Park campground, lots of nature and space around the sites, but no hookups and few sites are long enough for big rigs. Roads are narrow, making it difficult to back in with a long trailer. No cell coverage in the campground. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Site was about 25' from the Appalachian Trail. Space on the sites were fairly decent and though not very private, still felt private. Bathrooms had flushable toilets and were very clean (a nice surprise). Showers were in a different area and cost $ so bring your quarters (change machine is available). Great site, but would probably opt for one a little further down such as 180 for a better view. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Very large campground with every type of cabin imaginable, some built by the CCC or WPA. We stayed in a small RV and came to hike. No water, no electricity at sites, but dump and potable water available in the park. Great camp store with a (free) walk through, partially interactive, verbal & written narrative of the history of the area. Some hiking trails were easily accessible, others were a walk away ( but, hey, we were there to hike!). My only complaint is that they mix the tent campers with the RV'ers - and that is not a good combination, as the two camp very differently. I would return to this campground, but request to be put with other Rv'ers. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a restaurant on the grounds, pricey, but the people really care about the food they put out. Here is the famous 'Mile High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie' (after hiking, I ate it all!).

Fuel (gas & I believe diesel ) is available on the grounds, near the main road. The employees in the camp stores are very pleasant, helpful and genuinely friendly. The specialty food goods in these stores are great ( i.e. the blackberry jelly...the fudge). Take time here...there is a lot to experience.

This park is pristine with unbelievable views. The wife and I had been here many years ago before kids, so we decided to go back this time with them. The evening nature programs are excellent and the rangers are very polite, educational, and helpful. There is no electricity, and we provisioned a supplemental solar panel on our rig which worked just fine. We left on our 4th day as planned and still had 65% charge left on our single group 24 battery. I wish more people had a clue, it smells and sounds like an LA freeway during mid-day as everyone fires up their gas guzzling generators. Fortunately, we spent our days hiking and exploring the bountiful plenty that Shenandoah has to offer. The wildlife was the highlight of the trip as deer and bear are easily seen. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds. We spend a good deal of time on the AT in Shenandoah and this campground is such a nice respite. Here's what I like:

- It's lovely, on the side and top of a mountain and the sites are mostly in at least partial shade. It's also very quiet, and people are there to camp, not party.

- There's one of the best camp stores EVER on the way in. Blackberry milkshakes... Nuff said.

- The RVs are pretty well away from the rent campers. Good for everyone. The tenter aren't in the way of the RV folks, RVs don't have to worry as much about disturbing the tent people, generator noise, etc, and the tent campers don't have to be around all the big RVs. Win win.

- all the tent sites have a bear box, an even, flat tent pad area, grill and fire ring.

- there's secure trash areas within easy access, as well as bathhouse facilities an easy walk from every section

- the Rangers and staff here are helpful, professional and non obtrusive

It's so close to the trail, it's impossible to run out of breathtaking sights and fantastic hikes. It's truly a hiker and nature lovers paradise. You get people up here who are here to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, not a bunch of crazy locals looking for a party spot.

The last time we camped here we had some excitement. Keep in mind you are up on a mountain and the weather can change in a snap and get pretty crazy. Within seconds, we watched a cold dark fog roll in, then the temp dropped about 20 degrees and it proceeded to violently storm, resplendent with torrential downpours, loud thunder and frequent and impressive lightening. We huddled snug in our tent most of the night as it passed through. Pretty scary, but if you come up here remember that's what you might be signing up for.

Really beautiful campground. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent.

There are so many hikes and adventures it's hard to choose. If you want a fairly hardcore rock scramble go to Bearfence, if you love the rocks but don't want to scramble, go up Blackrock trail. The falls are a nice hike, and there's swimming holes in the area as well
