We stopped here for one night on our way home as a last minute decision. It was recommended to us by a fellow camper at our last stop. I would not recommend this place. For the price, it was not worth it. It was a former KOA so you still see all the yellow signs with Good Sam stickers placed over the KOA Logo. The roads are not in good shape. We were placed right next to the pond. It has scum on it and algae. Not pretty to look at and gave off a funky smell. In addition to that the ducks were all over and pooping too. The site was nothing great. Grass was not cut all around the campground or around the bath house. Our site was not level and was gravel and mud. Check in was ok but when asked how to fill up tires she told us. We did that only to find out the air machine which is right outside the office has a sign "out of order." Shouldn't this worker at the reception desk know this before having us maneuver our rig all around? Very hilly campsite. I can see how people fall in love with this place for the beauty but I have seen state parks, especially in Virginia, much prettier and half the price. I did use the shower and while in them said to myself, "not bad for a state park..." then I realized this was a private campground and was not impressed. Old and small with "fresh" paint on them. I would NOT stay here again. Did nothing for me except charge me way too much for my stay. Look for state parks next time. Just my opinion. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Travel Trailer.

This was an overnight stop for us on our way south. We had stayed here once before, years ago, when it was a KOA. Not much has changed. The KOA signage is still present in the park, with a Good Sam sticker placed over the top of the KOA logo. We had a water/electric/cable site as we requested, in the front section of the park. The site met our needs, as it was only an overnight and long enough that we didn't have to disconnect our tow vehicle. The cable did not work, even after renting one of their digital converter boxes. It is a bit of a hassle to get into the sites in the front of the park, as you have to drive right past them, loop around a section of the campground and come back at it from the other direction. Leaving in the morning requires you to drive into the main part of the campground again and loop around to access the exit. There are some decent sites in this campground, and some not so desirable. With the lack of other campgrounds (with decent ratings) in the area, we would stay here again if traveling through the area. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Motorhome.

We stayed in the largest cabin July 26-29,2018. It was a nice, clean cabin that can sleep eight people. Beautiful park and nice people. The cabin is in the sun ALL DAY. Zero shade so hard to keep cabin cool. It has a great deck with a picnic table and grill. BUT - full sun does matter when you cookout and eat and no umbrella for shade. All cabinets are for dishes/ cooking utensils so NO PLACE to put groceries. Hanging clothes in closet is a joke. If what you hang is over 20" long, it pools at the bottom and wrinkles your clothes. Freezer holds very, very little. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Cabin.

We have stayed here many times and will be back. We always stay down low in the "field" with no sewer. Not a problem if you plan ahead. Very quiet, well kept and folks in office were good. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

To park in lower level "field" which is a great quiet place you will need to enter the park and then come back to field. Same thing when leaving but park is well worth it. Also eat at the German Restaurant about 2 miles away.

We enjoyed it here and loved our space. However, when booking, please be advised that this is an unusual campground. It's split up into three sections -- there's an upper section near the cabins, the main sites around the lake (no swimming; just fishing) and a section near the road for larger rvs. If you stay in the section near the road, it's a bit of a hike to get to the bathhouse. A very unusual thing we noticed are the spaces parallel to the lake on the campground road. If you park in one of these and you have slides, your slides will be in the road. Do not get those. There is also a laundry room. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Fifth Wheel.

A must-do is eating at the Edelweiss restaurant. It was a cute little place that serves excellent German food and there were people playing accordian music. We also drove to Monticello which was about 50 min. away.

This was one of the cleanest, best kept parks that I have ever seen. The owners take pride in the park appearance. I the pool was perfect. My site was not very level side to side, it was about 4 inches off. However, it was very long so there may have been a more level spot to pick inside of my spot. The interior roads were narrow, but even the largest rig could have navigate the roads if they take it slow. This is a great campground. The restrooms and laundry rooms are kept clean, and if you report that they are not at any point they send someone to clean them. The sites are quite level and arranged so that you are not looking in your neighbors wind. The grounds are well kept and large enough to get good exercise within. The owners were very friendly and very visible on the grounds. The store was nicely stocked. There is a well stocked grocery store and hardware store about three miles away. There are site around a pond or up on a hill overlooking the pond. WiFi was quite good most of the time - much better than most campgrounds. Verizon signal was also good. I look forward to returning. The park is divided into two sections. One section with only water and electric, which we were in. The other a hilly section overlooking a small lake, with full hookups, but a steep hill to get to the top of the hill. Overall the park is very nice, which includes a nice pool. A quick, friendly check-in is followed by a round about drive through part of the park. Drive slow and you'll make it with a 40 foot motorhome with a toad. I will return. We loved it here and plan to come back next month. Extremely clean and friendly. We stayed on one of the patio sites. Since we moved up to a motor home and stayed at non-government campgrounds the sites tend to be very close. But even tho we were close the sites are staggered so it seemed we had some privacy. This is an easily-accessible campground just W of VA Route 340 S just outside of Stuarts Draft VA. We used it for an overnight stay this time, so no sewer hook-up in oversized pull-through site. The campground is very clean and quiet. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful park. We stayed here only one night on our way home from an extensive camping trip, but we would gladly have stayed longer. The people in the office were very helpful and, when we asked to upgrade to another longer site so that we did not have to unhook, they were very accommodating. We walked around the campground in the evening and were very impressed with most of the sites. The sites up on the hill, 52 through 86, are lovely and the Patio Sites have patio swings as well as paving. There is nice shade up there also. Sites 24 through 33 and 87 through 98 by the lake are also very nice. T28 is a beautifully secluded tent site! We would have been disappointed to be assigned sites 107 through 111. All five of those sites have a steep bank out the camper door and very little flat area around the camper. For someone who just wants to sit outside their door, that might work well, but if there are more people who would like to sit together, pets, or children who need a little space, those sites would be a poor choice. We were in site 88, which has a retaining wall and lots of grass below. That was a lot better. Sites 99 through 126 are in a converted field. They are all pull through sites and would be great for folks travelling through, but during the hot months the only shady relief in that area is on the backside of sites 99 through 106. The pool and playground make this place very kid friendly, and several families seemed to be enjoying fishing in the lake. Tips for other Campers:

We did not spend enough time near Staunton to find out the amenities. I will say that the rolling hills and farms in this area are lovely. Even though this campground is near the highway, it is far enough away to be very quiet and peaceful.

This is a pretty campground. There were flowers at our site. We were placed in a pull through that was on an upper road overlooking the park. Great view of campers below and the lake, but no shade at this site. Most sites were very shady. The park was clean. The roads are asphalt and the sites are crushed stone, with a table and fire ring.
