Quiet, wooded, mountain setting 9 miles clear of any cell reception. This is truly an escape from civilization! Great motorcycle roads, Appalachian trail, clean facilities and privacy makes this an ideal getaway. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Cut off -- and loved it! If you need to continually check your email and Facebook, this is *not* the place for you. There is *no* cell coverage (voice or data) available in the park. You'll need to drive 5-10 miles out, in order to get a signal. Sites are all back-in and most will need (at least) minimal leveling. As other reviews point out, the Groundhog Den loop is closest to the road, but it is a mountain road with minimal traffic -- we never noticed. Sites are all heavily wooded -- lots of choices for hanging the hammock. Sites have electric (30amp) and water with good pressure. Bath houses (2 per loop) are small and dated, but were clean an functional. Camp hosts were highly visible throughout our stay. There's a play area and wading pool and 2 hiking trails in in the campground. We camped over the 4th of July holiday and temperatures were 10-15F cooler than in Damascass -- we never used the A/C. We stayed in Grindstone primarily for the VA Creeper Trail. * Price includes $3 online reservation fee. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Tent Trailer.

We 'camped' in 40+ foot motorhome over July 4. There are bigger sites that accommodate this size unit. It is splendid at this campground. We used one AC, instead of all 3, because of 30amp power, but no more was needed; its cool up there. We camped in Cottontail, sites bigger, quieter there, away from a little road noise. Access to the Mount Rogers trail is right there, but does need some maintenance on this trail, some overgrowth of vines for a stretch. But, this doesn't distract from cg. Hosts are very nice, always accessible. We love it there, the elevation in the summer makes it a pleasant experience. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The closest grocery store is in Konnarock, we figured this out close to end of our stay, and very nice people there, banana pudding is delicious, they make great sandwiches, and a full breakfast!
VA Creeper Trail, we like the Bike Station for getting bikes, nice people work there.

Overall Rating:

Grindstone is a contractor-operated facility in Mt Rogers National Recreation Area. It could be described as remote and rustic with electric and water. There are 100 well separated and spacious campsites on a paved loop road system. The Opossum Loop (sites 1-21) is for dry camping, with occasional water spigots. Cottontail and Groundhog Loops (sites 22-100) have electric and water. Most sites are gravel, with a few ADA paved sites available. Virtually every site will need levelers, and most driveways are sloped up or downhill. Electric service and water pressure excellent. One dump station. Dumpsters bear-proofed.

There was a $9 fee to reserve online, but dozens of sites could have been claimed by walk ins during weekdays, eliminating that cost. We felt, along with the $24/night fee that it was overpriced. Thick forest, mostly deciduous, but some sites are in fir/hemlock groves. Cool mountain climate, 4,000' altitude. Over-the-air digital TV caught 5 channels, including NBC and FOX, and the only means of severe weather alerts. Zero Sprint voice or data service, nearest hit is 6 miles toward Chilhowie at the overlook or in Troutdale. No pay phone in campground, and no Wi-Fi. No way to communicate. Damascus has citywide free Wi-Fi. Roadways good for bicycling. Mt Rogers summit hiking trail begins in the campground. Appalachian Trail access three miles east. Pitch black dark at night. There is a swimming area, kids playground, and volleyball area.

Amphitheater appears abandoned. No ranger programs; dead with regard to interpretation. Backpack hiking, visiting the ponies at Grayson Highlands, and a downhill run on the nearby Virginia Creeper bicycle trail are the highlights. Come well prepared with groceries, supplies, and fuel. Communicate with loved ones before arriving. We would choose another campground next time. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Great CG for the "rustic" camper. This is an old growth forest with lots of huge trees and a thick canopy. Lots of great trails, and access to the AT directly. Sites are fairly level and most are huge. The site base is gravel and drains well. Sites on the Cottontail loop are spaced wider apart than the others. The interior roads are a little narrow, but did not prove to be a problem in parking a long rig. This CG is remote and there is very limited TV reception, spotty cell coverage, and a heavy canopy on most sites that limits satellite reception. There is a wading pool fed by a cold mountain stream in the day use area - great on a hot day.
The dump station is a little tight to get into for long camping units. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Wonderful remote campground. Very well maintained. Fully wooded sites. Some are level; some are not. Beautiful setting in the woods, close to plenty of hiking, mountain biking trails. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and helped us change sites when we realized the one we picked online didn't suit our needs. Awesome motorcycling area if you bring your scoot. Remote location so don't expect to find shopping nearby. This place is a new favorite getaway for me. I will return! We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Motorhome.

Small, quiet park in a wooded area with a VERY friendly staff. No cell service with Verizon. Our friends had Sprint and I think they had service.

We were in site 45 Cottontail which was very private but very sunny. Probably the only sunny site in the park. If you like sun this good but our trailer got hot during the day. Next time we are staying at 44. Beware sites along the road in Groundhog loop, you can hear the cars. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Checkout the Virginia Creeper Trail on a "Rails to Trails" path where you ride (or hike) your bike from Whitetop Station to Damascus VA (mostly downhill). Takes 2-3 hours. Shuttle service and bike rental that takes you to the top where you ride your bike down. Absolutely beautiful

If you need cell service take a left out of the campground and drive several miles (6?) to a stop sign, turn right and up the hill on the left is a large scenic overlook parking lot.

Grindstone is a US Forest Service campground, with the extremely friendly campground hosts provided by the Cradle of Forestry. It is located in a remote area on the flanks of Mount Rogers. At approximately 3,700 ft. elevation and heavily wooded, the campground is relatively cool. We escaped the summer 90s and enjoyed the 72 degree highs in the campground. Campground roads are paved, while sites are gravel. Most sites are long and very widely spaced, providing a lot of privacy. Sites 29, 43, and 58 have steep downhill entry slopes, so longer rigs will have difficulty leveling front-to-back. Opossum loop has no hook-ups. Cottontail loop sites have water, electric hook-ups. Groundhog loop has both basic and water, electric sites. Groundhog loop is close to the highway so road noise can be aggravating. There is no WiFi or cell phone service, and the tree canopy makes locating satellite dishes difficult or impossible. The nearby VA Creeper Trail provides enjoyable bicycle riding experience. Hikers can take the trail up to the summit of Mt. Rogers right from the campground. For those wanting a cool, peaceful, and quiet camping experience, this is the place! The fee shown reflects the senior discount. The campground is busy on weekends, so reservations are recommended for sites with utilities. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Travel Trailer.

My wife and I were there on our fall track to the VA Creeper. This State Park is highly maintained by a group of very friendly personnel. Each lot is spacious and heavy in tree cover. On our visit the leaves were turning color, which to the enjoyment of our ride. We will utilize this park again. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The sites are mostly shaded with plenty of space between them. The staff was outstanding! There are staff members parked on each of the three loops and marked with permanent signs in case of after-hours problems or emergencies. Unfortunately our site (#43) isn't really suited to anything much longer than 28 to 30 feet, even though the listing on recreation.gov shows 80 feet, because of the slope of the driveway and a tree at the back end. We couldn't get our 38 foot fifth-wheel level (front to back)even with the landing gear fully retracted. The staff would have moved us when we pulled in if they weren't full up. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We camped here in April to ride on the Va. Creeper Trail. The staff was sitting around the entrance gate when we arrived. They were all very welcoming and friendly. We left our tarp and a member of the staff offered to loan us one. The campground is beautiful with wooded lots. There is a playground, wadding area fed by a stream and hiking trails. The bath house was clean and well kept. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I could see bath house being crowded on holidays but we never had to wait. I would like to stay here in the future. It was very peaceful and quit. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Tent.

Grindstone is the best kept secret in southwest Virginia. This place is gorgeous. The sites are enormous & woodsy. As the previous poster said, there isn't much to do within the confines of the campground, but the surrounding area is full of hiking and biking trails. The campground has a spring fed concrete wading area for your swimming pleasure, a basketball net in the parking lot, and a small playground that looks fairly new. The bathrooms are old but kept very clean, and the water is warm but not steamy hot. The altitude makes it cool here. When we were camping, it was 20 degrees warmer down the mountain in town, so bring sweatshirts. This is a great place to stay to ride the Virginia Creeper trail, as you can drive into Damascus within a half hour and catch a shuttle or accress the trail directly from the town. The campground hosts are wonderfully friendly. We camped at Grindstone Campground in a Tent Trailer.

I agree with the previous posters. We stayed in a site in the 43-59 area. Incredibly peaceful and private campsites. I cannot wait to return. The spring fed concrete wading area was very dirty when we were there, so my kids did not play in it. Also, while the bathrooms are kept clean, there are no paper towels and no handsoap.
