Great park. Lots to do with swimming pool, museum, trails, and river within walking distance. Had a little power issue at our site but staff was very responsive and it was resolved quickly. Check in had to be taken care of at the visitor center instead of the entrance kiosk. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Motorhome.

This is an overall very nice park. We stayed in Loop B which are the newer electrical/water paved sites. Sites are very big and we had tons of room in the pull through site we had. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was because of the pea gravel they use. I am still finding little pebbles in my camper that get stuck in your shoes. Sprint cell was spotty, AT&T cell was non existent. Showers were big and clean, Laundry room had book swap and washers and dryers were each $1. There is a vehicle ferry across the James River to get to Williamsburg, Jamestown etc. It will fit RVs so if you come in that way you will be fine. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Typical State Park. Water and electric but no sewer. Sites very unlevel. Very clean Showers and Bathrooms. No Wi-Fi or cable but plenty of local channels. Excellent hiking trails. Need someone at gatehouse to check people in as 1st time campers would be confused on how to check in. Also need to enforce rules as Golf cart was riding around with kids when the Golf cart are not allowed. Will stay here again. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Motorhome.

Enjoyed our stay overall, nice level paved site with just enough trees between each site for privacy. Close to plenty of historical areas to make travel to each easy (Williamsburg, Jamestown, Norfolk, etc.). The site I was on was a 50 amp and I had to find a 50 to 30 amp adapter, Smithfield is the nearest place to shop but it's only about 15 miles away. We did drive over to the plantation fields on the park after dark and watched the deer feeding in the peanut and soybean fields, must have seen more than 100. The staff was very helpful in getting a reservation error straightened out and let us extend our stay. Would recommend this campground to anyone wanting to enjoy VA history. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the older loop A which has gravel sites and is mostly used by tent/pop up campers and smaller trailers. Our site (S19) was level but most in this loop did not appear to be. We really enjoyed this campground. Spacious sites, friendly employees, nice trails along the river. Bath house was very clean. We will definitely return. S19 is the first site at the entrance and therefore had quite a few vehicles driving by so we would most likely choose a different one next time. Chippokes Plantation at Surry Virginia. State Park. Wonderful wooded campsites. Nicely set up. NOT even, you will need something like boards to level your rig. Near the Chippokes plantation, take a day to visit it. Swimming pool, walk the beach by the river. Lots of great history to see. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful park off the beaten path. Water and voltage good. Long pull thru with shade. The restrooms/showers were cleaned daily and were immaculate. The dump station was about 1/2 mile from campground. It would be impossible for a big rig to dump and make a U-turn to return to the campground.

You can access the James River and tour the plantation. I felt the term plantation was stretching it a bit, but it was interesting. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The closest major shopping areas involved riding a free ferry to the Jamestown/Williamsburg area. There was a Dollar General about 5 miles away so you can get a lot of things there as well.

Nice state park campground on the James River. Lots of ranger activities like fishing tournaments, fossil walks and tours of the mansions in the park. There is also a farm equipment museum that is very interesting. Ranger were very friendly and helpful. Campsite was typical of the newer state park campsites. Drive was gravel and the picnic table/tent area was pea gravel. Site was level and easy to access. The sites in the loop to the right (can't remember if they are a or b loop) are older, mostly first come and not as level. They are also shorter and listed as E/W30 sites. We camped in site S01 with a 27 ft travel trailer and my pickup. My total length is 50 ft and we had room for a second vehicle. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Our site was a very long, pull through, paved site located in Loop B. The sites have water and 50 amp electric, but no sewer. The Loop B sites are spacious and surrounded by vegetation and tall pines. We had good Verizon cell and internet reception, but no DishTV reception (trees). Big rigs should follow the park directions to Alliance Road (west end of route 634) and not GPS directions to Highgate Road (which is the east end of route 634). We would stay here again. Overall Rating:

Wonderful Virginia State Park across the James River from Jamestown and Williamsburg. Easy access on good rural roads and the ferry across the James River is free (weekends can get busy). Once inside park the campground is very accessible and has 2 loops, A & B. Loop A is older with many small and unlevel sites but is almost completely in heavy shade. This would work for tent or small trailer campers but bring leveling blocks. Loop B is modern with good water and electric hookups and can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet. Most sites are close to level. Check in first at the Visitor Center. All park personnel were very friendly and helpful at checkin and throughout the park. Most B sites are shaded just not has heavy as in Loop A. B sites are asphalt and most have a large gravel living area with picnic table, cooking style fire pit and lantern pole. The B Loop bath house is very modern and extremely clean. It has seperate shower facilities in the back which are excellent. While we camped on weekdays, the bathrooms were always very clean. The B Loop bath house also has a small laundry and an exchange library. The park has a very nice bike and walking trail along the James River to the historic area in the park which includes two historic plantation homes with out buildings, an interesting farm & forestry museum and many other farm buildings. An Olympic size swimming pool with snack bar is also in the park. Pool admission and park tours are included free with your camp site fee. The park has good activities including kayaking and canoeing, mansion tours, and children oriented activities. Our grandchildren really enjoyed swimming and playing in the James River and the diving board at the pool. Also the old tractors parked in an old barn were a big hit. We will definitely return. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a great park to just relax at or use for the nearby activities in Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Bush Gardens, or even Yorktown.

There are no major stores to shop for groceries etc so bring with you. A Dollar General and 7 Eleven is about 4 miles away. A nice relaxing restaurant, the Surry Seafood Co., is not too far on a beautiful wide creek that runs to the James River. It has both indoor and outdoor seating with great water and marsh views.

Overall Rating:

A really lovely Virginia state park full of history in a quiet out of the way area. An easy 45-60 minute drive to Williamsburg (with ferry), Norfolk, and Richmond so we used the park to explore those areas and more. The park is very nice, but limited on trails. Two loops, the A loop has smaller sites with more tree coverage and not recommended for big rigs. The newer B loop is reservation only and is very nice with full hookups and all sites are big rig friendly. The pull through sites toward the end are some of the longest we've ever seen! None of the sites are super level, but not a huge problem. No dog waste station or poop bags anywhere in the park, nor anywhere to let the dogs run. We had sattelite reception at our site and Verizon was mediocre. Use caution when using a GPS to drive here, it may want to take you down a weight restricted road with lots of low branches. Check the website and follow their directions. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a nice small state park. Very nice staff and camp hosts, and the sites (half of which are only a handful of years old) are in very good shape. The park is beautiful. It is on the site of a plantation which can be toured. There is a visitor center, a lake, a pool. It is a well kept campground. The sites are well separated. We are in B loop which has paved sites, water, and electricity. We are here only for the night on our way down the coast. The Showers are gorgeous. There is a coin operated laundry and a book swap. The downside, which is a big one for us as retirees, is the rate - $46 a night. This is the rate for out-of-state guests. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We enjoy camping here each year. We stay in the newer loop (B). The campsites are well maintained with picnic table and fire ring, and the roads are wide and clear for navigating a large rig. The driveway is paved with a pebble rock area for the fire, and picnic table. Super easy to back in (or pull through) and level. Most sites have shade during most of the day. In the other loop (A), the sites are smaller, not paved, have picnic table and fire ring but more shade. Bath houses are a short walk away and clean. It's WAY off the main road so very dark and quiet. There is a nice walking/ biking path, playgrounds, and beach (though not for swimming). We do like to walk to the beach and walk along the water: it's just beautiful. It is not within site of the camping area, but the walk is not too far. (Unless you have little kids but there is parking near the start of the trail.) The pool is nice and well maintained, with a diving board, life guards and snack bar. The only thing I would change about this campground is the location of the playground. It is outside of the campground. It's within bike riding distance but really too far to walk to with little ones. The same for the pool really. It's a little closer, but too far to walk with heavy pool bags or little kids. However, there is plenty of parking near both. The reservations used to be first come, first served. They are changing to site specific reservations, but there really isn't a bad site at this campground. They have buddy sites so 2 campers can be near each other and these might not be pleasant if you didn't know the other person, but the other sites are pretty private. We camped at Chippokes Plantation State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Sometimes we drive over to the Surry ferry and take it over to Williamsburg to eat out, go to Busch Gardens, shop, etc. The kids think its AWESOME to drive our big truck on the ferry and ride over, even if we didn't do anything there. But if it's a rainy camping trip, there is nothing to do near the campground, and there is lots to do on the Williamsburg side. This campground is so much cheaper than the Williamsburg campgrounds, and nicer!
