Very secluded sites, surrounded by trees. The trolley stops ended on October 1st so you need to have transportation to get back and forth to Virginia Beach boardwalk, which is six miles away. Therefore, If you are camping in a motor home, make sure to tow a vehicle with you for transportation. Most of the sites are not long enough for a 30 foot rig and car so you will have to leave your car in the parking lot at the park entrance. Most sites are back in, which can be difficult due to narrow roads, trees, and tight spaces. No site hook ups, but there is a 2 station Dump station at entrance to campground. Campground is next to a busy Naval Reserve Training station. I heard many helicopters throughout the day and gunfire at nights, which became somewhat annoying. The beach was relatively close but no one was swimming because of the weather (I guess). There were several people fishing from the beach. At sunset the dolphins come pretty close to the shore looking for fish to eat. One night several large dolphins were about 30 feet from the shore aggressively chasing fish. I was a little nervous about getting in the water after seeing this. I rated the service low because the camp store and office closed at 4:30 during the non peak periods. If your looking for a secluded place nestled in a wooded camp ground or enjoy fishing then this is a great spot. If you want more activities and access to nightlife then you may not like this campground, especially during non peak periods. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Large campground at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The State Park extends far across the highway and includes miles of multi-purpose trails popular with joggers and cyclists. Some sites are small and near - almost surrounded by - swampy standing water; others are on higher ground and surrounded by mature low trees. Pick a site close to the beach to avoid the swamps if you can. The sites labelled "site specific" are those that van be specifically reserved. Others are reserved by category. Our site 143 was fairly private and a short walk to beach access boardwalk. If you have a big or tall rig, use the outermost perimeter campground roads for ingress/egress, as the interior roads have low-hanging trees. No sites have sewer but there is a dual-station sanitary dump in the front of the campground. Showers had plenty of hot water, but are basic paint-peeling concrete - about what you'd expect for a beach campground. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The beach fronts the Chesapeake Bay, not ocean. Safe for small children as the waves are small. Explore the rest of the park across Shore Drive. There is a fine multi-use trail that goes to the Atlantic Ocean, from which you can bike-ride to the beach boardwalk. Also some canoeing/kayaking. If you stay in the eastern-most part of the campground you will be treated to patriotic loudspeaker music every morning at 8am.

I loved it here! The restrooms are clean for being on the beach, sand will be everywhere. For me personally I really like the online booking option which lets you pick your spot based on availability and each spot has a picture of the selected empty site. Lots of nature walks and a total of 3 boardwalks to the Bay. Defiantly will camp here again, should I ever be in area again. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

What a great campground! We were only planning on staying one night but as soon as we saw the campground, it was so nice we added another night. Our site was under a canopy of twisted, gnarled trees. Lots of trees between sites made it very secluded. Site 151 was right across from the beach. You couldn't really see the beach but there was a boardwalk to the beach. The staff and campground hosts were friendly and helpful. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are great hiking and biking trails in the park across the street from the campground. We did a 14 mile bike ride on the Cape Henry trail. It meanders through forest, past exotic lagoons, salt marshes and beautiful Lake Susan Constant. It is very close to Virginia Beach, lots of shopping and restaurants. Be sure not to miss Cape Henry lighthouse and First Landing Historic site just a few miles away. You can walk to the beach from any campsite.

This is the most dog friendly state park we have ever visited. Dogs were welcome just about everywhere. The gift shop had a bowl of water set out for the dogs and the trail center across the road along the Cape Henry Trail had a doggy water fountain. I'm happy to report that everyone seemed to appreciated this and picked up after their dogs. We stayed for 2 weeks and had to change sites once. Verizon cell and hot spot worked well. For 12 nights we had a site specific spot and a nonspecific site for a weekend. The specific reservable site was the largest camp site we've ever had. Room for the motor home, car and kayak trailer plus a tent. Most of the reservable sites seemed to be equally large. The nonspecific site was more crowded but everything fit, too. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the beach is great but the trails through the woods, marsh and to the bay were great for riding bikes and walking. We kayaked in the bay and enjoyed the view of summer homes and wildlife. This state park seems to have something for everyone. It is only 5 miles from the boardwalk. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Virginia Beach Aquarium and Science center will entertain all ages. There is a Adventure park within it that has a rope course and zip lines that kept preteens through adults busy. If you kayak or boat, there is a huge free parking lot and boat launch next to the aquarium. After launching, you can kayak/boat the Rudee inlet out to the Atlantic.

Great start at First Landing again. We love the specific site reservations with their pilot program. Glad to see they are going to expand the program in 2017. It's great to know exactly the site you have and not to have to rush to get to the campground. We can take our time and leisurely drive knowing we have a specific site with our name on it. We do wish they would repave the campground roads, very rough in places and sometimes tight to squeeze through. Great beach experience again, we love no life guards to "look after us". We are adults and don't need those blasted whistles screaming at every "supposed infraction". Quite a bit of trash around on the beach, I wish people would clean up after themselves, but we all know some people just suck the beauty out of everything. Uncrowded expansive sand is our idea of a perfect beach day. The boardwalk over the dunes to the beach needs desperately to be replaced, and have for ten years now, repairing a few boards a year does not make it feel like a secure structure to walk on as well as getting splinters if you aren't careful. They really catered to day use visitors with day use areas well maintained and patrolled regularly by park police. We like the feeling of being all by yourself most of the time, lots of trees and scrub brush between sites. Sprint cell service at the campground is OK and complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the office. Water and 30 amp electrical service is included at your site and worked well. Trees were abundant to hang out hammocks. Relaxation = Wonderful! Overall a great stay and we will definitely return here again! We camped at First Landing State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Rate was for non-specific site, including the Reserve America fee. Great location just barely inside the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The beach is about 100-150 yards across the dunes via boardwalks at selected points, and very uncrowded since it's just campers using it. Lots of tent sites, and sites limited to 20 foot & 30 foot RVs, as well as some larger sites. Campground roads might be tight for large rigs, as would some sites, but there were RVs of all types when I was there. A few sites aren't that level, and shade varies considerably, too. Folks who are picky may want to utilize the site-specific reservation option (costs extra). Vegetation separates adjoining sites, but you are rather open to the site directly across the narrow road in some spots. There is a pretty good camp store that stayed open until 11:00 PM when I was there, as well as laundry facilities, and you're only a mile away from a grocery store & drug store just down the road from the park. It's only a short drive to the Virginia Beach oceanfront if that is of interest. Although I did hear helicopters a couple times a day, they weren't that loud unless they flew directly overhead, and that lasted about 30 seconds. They might be more active at other times, but I wouldn't think most people would be bothered. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Sites are generally adequate in size. Good spacing and privacy between sites. Pay attention to the recommended maximum lengths on the reservation map when reserving; unlike some campgrounds, they really mean something for this one. Sites are not right on the beach, but rather backed up to dunes. There is access at several points throughout the campground via boardwalks. There are many excellent shaded tent sites. Vegetation along the roads needs to be cut back in the campground. There are many overhanging limbs that scrub the tops and sides of a fifth wheel, motorhome, or class C camper. The roads are laid out in a way that makes it difficult to avoid scratching up your sides and top. Lots to do in the area, and great walks along a part of the beach that doesn't have a lot of public traffic. I would love to camp here again in the future, I just hope they cut back the vegetation along the roads. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Its on the beach, but to access the beach you must go to a boardwalk of which there are several. For the most part the ocean is blocked by the dunes which you are prohibited from walking on. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Truck Camper.

We love staying at this campground because of the country feel yet you are still in the city. The sites are spacious with good separation from your neighbor. Water is good and power worked well, but no sewer. We reserved a site this time and that was nice. The staff was friendly and security seemed good especially during the weekend. The price I listed included the reservation fee. Our site was very quite except for local military air traffic but it didn't bother us. We will definitely be staying here again. We enjoyed our time at this campground. From our campsite, we could hear and see the ocean. This campground has narrow roads, which are not big rig friendly. Use caution. Campground within 1 mile of gas stations, restaurants, freeway and grocery stores. Verizon phones were able to maintain a 4g signal. DirecTV (free standing satellite) had no issue. We utilized this campground to visit Virginia Beach, which was within a 30min drive and Nauticus and Wisconsin Battleship museum. We also took the Chesapeake Bridge, which has a small restaurant midway. We (including our furry friends) did not enjoy the pot stickers covering the grounds throughout the park. Our dogs were constantly crying for help, and walking barefoot isn't an option. Please use caution before stepping into your RV, as these pot stickers can find their way inside, and they do hurt on bare feet. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed early in 2014. It's a great place, a well kept park, and has a nice touch of wilderness to it. The biggest draw back is lack of sewer connections so bring a portable tank or simply use the bath houses. There's much to do. You can hike, bike, dine out, and see various attractions within a short distance. I would stay there again but it's hard to get reservations. It fills up fast. Really enjoyed our stay in this park. Sites were well spaced. Some paved, some gravel, some sand. Bathrooms were older but clean. Had a little trouble with WiFi at lounge but cell data worked just fine. Enjoyed biking and hiking in this park. Lots of trails just across the street in the main section of park. Regular patrols by park police, was a little cold and windy this trip so not sure what bugs will be like when warmer. Will definitely return. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall, we can't complain about this park. I think we aren't fans of camping at the beach. The park layout was nice, though. Multiple access points from the campground to the beach. Clean bathrooms/shower houses. Convenient concession stand. Fun interpretive events/activities for the kids. Friendly and helpful staff. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Travel Trailer.
