This is the place to come to disconnect. Electric site only, water and dump station were a disconnect away. Bathrooms were clean, though we only used the composting toilet. Nice walk around the campground. Hosts were great, but they weren't supplied regularly with firewood and the reservation system is antiquated making it difficult to extend a stay. ***WARNING: I didn't read other commenters posts about only arriving via Route 39 and NOT USING GPS, but you really should!!! The sign "RV's and towing Not Recommended" coming from the other direction is terribly understated. The road is tortuous and tight with cliff on one side and a drop off on the other. We came face to face with a truck hauling a boat coming the other way and had 6 inches before we went off of the cliff.*** We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Bolar Mountain is off the beaten path in a great way! Very nice campground with paved roads and sites on the lake. As with anything in the VA/WV mountains, take your time on lots of twisty roads, but it's worth it. Don't expect to use electronic communications, no cell, tv, or even radio. You are down in a valley between two ridges and nothing gets in but sunshine! On a clear night the stars are endless however. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Gas up before getting off the highway. Gas is available in the park ( but at a premium ). Warning, do NOT follow the GPS if it takes you in via VA603. Coming from Warm Springs stay on VA 39 till you get to the park signs on VA600.

This is an update to a review I posted a couple of years ago. Since that time the campgrounds management has been turned over to a new contractor (Royal Elk) and from what we saw they aren't doing such a hot job of hiring campground host's. We arrived in in loop 3 at 4PM and the Host showed up at my trailer at 9PM to finally check us in, and didn't know if she had already checked us in!! We were camped there for 4 days and saw the Host's twice during that time and no one cleaned the showers or rest rooms during that time. The men's room is down to one toilet and one sink as the other 2 are broken. Fortunately there were very few campers so things didn't get too bad in the restrooms. Additionally, in my earlier review I suggested taking a short cut via Jackson River Turnpike and Richardson Gorge Road. DO NOT GO THIS ROUTE if you are towing or driving an RV. There is a section where part of the road has washed out and there is a tree down blocking part of the road. Going this way was never for the faint of heart as it is dirt and very narrow most of the way and if you meet someone it can be nerve wracking. 12 miles to nearest gas station. Gas available at the marina but off water and pretty expensive. Nearest grocery, a small IGA and a Dollar store, is about 16 miles.

Most sites are fairly level, and sites are large, with a base of fine gravel that drains water well. Water sites do not have electricity. Sites are a little tight together, except the water sites (which also have the best view). Most water sites are fairly low to the water and have a trail to the water for access to kayaks/canoes and boats. saw lots of folks fishing, but did not see any catching!

This CG is being operated by a contractor; they were very hospitable and did a good job.

The loop 2 bath house is nice and has private rooms for both bathrooms and shower facilities. I think the other loops have conventional shower stalls.

This is a pretty mountain lake, ideal for the "rustic" camper with an old growth forest and lots of wildlife. Seems like there were always birds chirping, squirrels barking and other wildlife sounds.

If a remote camping experience is what you seek, this CG is for you; if not, go somewhere else. There is no TV reception, very limited radio reception, no cell phone service except maybe text capabilities in one or two areas in the CG, and no weather radio reception. Satellite is very spotty because of a heavy canopy of trees.

I would rate this CG higher than "average" if it were not for the long difficult access roads. The roads are adequate for a camping unit of moderate length. But, for a class A or long fifth wheel unit, the route in is just not pleasant. Between the fairly narrow roads, hills, tight turns, fast logging trucks, low hanging limbs and rain at the time, it was not a very enjoyable trip in for us. If you do go, follow the directions on the website to find the CG signs. Do not use a GPS exclusively. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a US Forest Service campground on Lake Moomaw in Virginia. We stayed in Loop #1 site 19 which has 30 amp electric but no water or serwer. The drinking water tap is only about 100' from the site so I was able to hook up a hose to refill my water tank. The site is relatively level, I needed about 2" of lift on the curb side. Everything in this loop was clean and neat and very quiet (we were there during the week), the restrooms were clean as were the showers. You can't see the lake from the upper loop, but if you want to really rough it (no electric) the lower loop sites are all waterfront. The lake and surrounding area are absolutely beautiful, with mountains totally surrounding the lake. There is a beautiful sandy beach, about a mile away, (no life gaurds) and the water is clean, sandy bottomed and warm. There is a marina where you can launch and retrieve boats, but no gas is available. There is no additional charge for the use of these facilities if you are a camper.
Getting there:
We went by way of I64 to 252 which turns into Rt 42 which takes you to Millboro where you get RT 39 to Warm Springs and the Rt 39 and Rt 220 intersection. Route 42 had only one stretch of fairly steep twisty road (5-10 miles) but the rest was pretty easy. Route 39 (after the 220 intersection) on the other hand has a very steep, up and down, and very twisty (multiple hairpins) stretch to the Rt 600 intersetion. I suggest taking Rt. 687 (Jackson River Turnpike) which avoids the climb and descent. It will turn to dirt for about 3 miles but the road is in good shape. It has no guard rails and there are some pretty good drop offs and narrow spots. Decide for yourself which is best for you.
When you get to the camprground there is nobody in the booth at the entrance, just go to your site and the campground "host" will come to your site and check you in. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is extremely remote. There is no TV reception, and cell service is sketchy at best. We have Verizon, and we had 1 bar which allowed us to text but calling didn't work for us. If you need gas, get it before you head to the campground as it is 12 miles to the nearest station. There is a station on Rt 39 on the left just before the Rt 687 turn that you can get a rig into. The only grocery store that I know of is an IGA in Warm Springs on Rt 220.

If you want an escape from phone, TV, etc then this is the place. Only one radio station available. It was difficult to find a site that I could level out. Had it been during the busy season I would not have been able to change my spot. This was definitely off season with less than 5 campers there. Only one campground open. Hunting season open and Forest Service employee recommended to not go into woods without bright reflective clothing. Lake level is down almost 20 feet but there were some boats out there. I felt too isolated after 4 nights and left one day early. Nice facility but because of isolation I will probably not return. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

If you're looking for relaxation this is the place (no cell service)! Bath houses were rebuilt last year with an improved layout. Several spaces are large enough to fit the trailer, boat and two pick-ups, though it is a little tight. I wish more spaces had electric and water hook-ups, but otherwise you can't beat it. We stopped here overnight on our way to Kentucky. Very narrow access road (no shoulder, steep bank on one side). Site wasn't very level but we were able to get the camper level. Nice, clean showers. Very pretty area. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Truck Camper.

Overall Rating:

This campground is located on a ridge above Lake Moomaw in the National Forest. The lake is absolutely beautiful for boating. But, you can't see the lake from the campground site, unless you are tent camping. Most of the campers appeared to be fisherman, hunters, and other outdoorsmen. It was very quiet. The campground managers were helpful and friendly. We camped at Bolar Mountain Campground USFS in a Tent Trailer.
