I would give Jim Creek a 10+ if the WiFi had worked, but we were here for a week and it never worked even at the office. They said the weather had something to do with it, which must mean "a cloud" since we had 3 glorious days. Also, we were not able to get TMobile/AT&T cell to give us more than Emergency Service only, but I understand that Verizon does work. Saying that, Jim Creek is a must do. Sites are wide and deep and level, with electricity and water. (Dump is available on the way out.) Bathrooms are handicapped, but the toilet is metal and will take your breath away in cold weather. Each room has a hot and free shower. Also there is a laundry available for a buck. Staff is wonderful, helpful and lots of fun. Small museum tells the story of the base. Kids have lots to do: playgrounds, games, fields, bike rentals. Pets also have runs. Don't have an RV, lots of wonderful tent sites and cabins with wood burning stoves and porch swings are all over the base. Trails to hike. The lake is about 5 miles away, by trail or road. (RVs and Motorcycles are not allowed on the road as it is narrow.) Once your at the lake, kayaks and paddle boats are available. Make sure you know where you are going as there are no signs pointing the way. After the Dead End sign, you will come to the gate which is manned 24 hours a day. It is open all year long. We camped at Jim Creek Wilderness Recreation Area (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Let's see what I can say that is bad about this place. Wi-Fi sucked. It was up and down (mostly down) the entire time. That's pretty much it except hat and there is no place to swim or wade. This is, without a doubt, the cleanest, best maintained military recreation campground I have ever seen or been in. They have RV camping, tent camping, cabins (from no bedrooms on up), and a lodge. There is dog walk areas, hiking trails, and recreational equipment to rent (boats, bikes, etc, etc, etc). Don't come here expecting a night-life. There is almost no cell-phone service and the only TV is off a satellite. Mid-week (when we were there) it is quiet, quiet, quiet. Weekends it can be busy: more-so, if the Sea-Scouts are there. You can check out the new national web-site for the site reservation number. http://get.dodlodging.net/. We camped at Jim Creek Wilderness Recreation Area (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

I am an active duty Soldier and while camping at K&M Beach-wood last year we meet a retired Navy guy who highly recommended this campground. It took almost a year but we finally got around to it and we are glad we did. First off make sure and check the campgrounds website for specific criteria as this is a DOD facility and not everyone can enter but if you make the cut I highly recommend this site. The drive to the front gate was a little "scary" as there are no signs whatsoever directing you to this location. It is a site which allows worldwide communication with the Naval Fleet and thus is well advertised. But as you trek down the well maintained 2 lane road it comes to an abrupt halt at the front gate. But no fear, it is manned 24/7 and as we approached the gate opened up. We checked in with the full time armed security who directed us to the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) office where I checked in. The front desk staff are just too nice and very professional and helpful. We stayed in site 11. All the RV sites have a large cement pad to park on. But as we found out the pads are not level and slope. No problems. Some leveling pads and we were good. The sites have a type of water hook up I have never seen before. You attach your hose, and pull the lever up and in the process pull down a round bypass switch when then diverts water into the hose. Strange. Well ours was sort of broke and it took some wet sleeves and pair of needle noses to make it work but the camp host was Johnny on the Spot and assisted me and made sure maintenance was made aware. The sites are just perfect with enough trees to provide cover from the rain and spaced apart far enough to ensure privacy. As with all military MWR sites they offer all sorts of outdoor equipment for rent form horse shoes to mountain bikes. Activities were planned throughout the weekend including an ice cream social and hay ride. All the facilities are well maintained. To top it all off, since the site use to have an Officers Club, they have a nice bar in the top of the check in office and serve all sorts of beers and mix drinks at a fraction of what you pay in the civilian world. We didn't take advantage since we had our kiddos but looked to be a very nice gig. The other main draw is Twin Lakes. Following a somewhat narrow, semi-improved, curvy road up and down the mountains, you end up at a picturesque lake. No swimming but small boats are available for rent as well as entire fishing sets and you can buy a license. So much outdoor stuff to do! We will definitely come back again. Highly recommend to get reservations as early as possible. We booked for the Memorial Day weekend about three months prior. A+++ Good job Navy! We camped at Jim Creek Wilderness Recreation Area (Military Camping Only) in a Travel Trailer.
