Overall Rating:

We stayed here for two weeks, then out for a week, then two weeks again. As usual, we stayed on the river side of the campground because there are no spaces we would fit in available on the main side. That's OK with us, we don't use the facilities anyway except the bathrooms, which were in better shape this time than they have been in the past. The pool area was very clean and looked inviting, and it appears like the campground might be getting a little facelift. We saw some "suits" there walking around, and while we were there a new wifi connection was being installed on the river side at the office/adult lounge building. We hope someone is paying attention to this campground, because it sorely needs it. Our site this time was through the entrance near the adult lounge, and we chose a site on the tree side rather than the water side. This wound up being an excellent choice, as we were in the shade by about 10 am and stayed in the shade until the sun was going down. Kept the rig a lot cooler. Since we have family in the area, we choose to shower at their house, and we can go the two weeks without dumping. It doesn't seem fair that we should have to pay for that service when we've been paying dues for 30 years and can't access the sites with a sewer connection because the larger ones have all been "sold" as permanent sites. You now have to call a company to have the honey wagon come out, so plan ahead because emergency calls are more expensive! The roads on the river side have turnarounds and are easy enough to navigate, but the main side has tight turns and hills - you might need to know that if you need to use the dump station and have a large rig like ours. The dump station across the road was closed part of the time we were there, and since it's designed to dump on the way out of the main section, it would be almost impossible for us to get into it with our large rig as there's no place to turn around without going into the grass. We would have to go around the whole park, and the turns are really tight and it's hilly. We dump at the rest area on the freeway, one near Marysville, one near Arlington, and another near Bow on I-5. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Walmart and Fred Meyer in Monroe have whatever you would need, and there's a Starbucks and a few decent restaurants. Snohomish has a Kohl's, there's a mall in Everett and a larger mall in Lynnwood. Keep in mind it takes 15 minutes just to get to Monroe down Ben Howard Rd, but since there aren't many other options near Seattle....if you're able to boondock and want to visit Seattle, you might consider Tulalip casino. Closer to the freeway and an easy run down I-5 to Seattle.

We chose to be on the river side so there was no sewer. The park no longer provides a pumping service and it is $60 now to have someone come in. The yard was very rough to walk in and grass was long. With the high charge for dumping we will not be staying here again. You can use their dump station which is across the road but has no water to put a few gallons back in your tank. Picnic table was in rough shape. That being said being on the water was nice. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

TEST the voltage BEFORE you plug in. Low voltage in camp burned out our microwave and central vac system. Our neighbor revealed there have been previous electrical problems at Thunderbird. Thousand Trails member services does not return phone calls. Absolutely worst customer service we have ever received from TT. We do not recommend this park to anyone with electrical appliances. Another old, tired Thousand Trails park. The check in was fast and efficient with one of the most pleasant ladies we have ever seen. One half of the park has sewer sites, but only one was available and we are too large to fit. The opposite side of the highway for non sewer sites. Rigs in the park appear to be lived in by homeless people who use the park for a residence. Adult lodge smelled of mold and had to go here to get TV reception. Electric pedestal and water connection were wobbly. One way in/out and horribly dusty. Will probably not stay here again. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

This is the closest Thousand Trails park to Seattle. We wanted to visit friends in Seattle, and so it was a good choice for that. However, some negatives: there is quite a long drive (3-5 miles) on Ben Howard Road to get to the campground, and it is pretty narrow and windy for a 43' motorhome. The site we chose (43) was off a road that was very uphill and the site was pretty much perpendicular to the road, which meant the site was pretty level (a good thing) but was rather hard to get the bus into. I noticed the sites on the other side of the road were at an angle to the road which would have made them easier to get into. It appeared that the sites across the Ben Howard Road (water&electric only) would have been easier to get into - but then you would have had to come to the other side of the road if you wanted to dump. The dump station was well located if you needed to dump after leaving the full hookup sites, but the turn to get into it if you were coming from across Ben Howard Road looked like it would have been challenging. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Motorhome.

We stayed here at Christmas time and weren't impressed at all, but it looks like a few things have improved since then. When it's dry, the sites are comfortable and pleasant - not so much when it's raining or snowy out. We had to stay across the road on the river side again, because there are no sites available on the main side of the "resort". All of the longer ones appear to be taken by "permanent" guests. That was not allowed when we bought our membership almost 30 years ago, and it makes it very difficult to stay in what used to be a nice resort when we tent-camped years ago with the kids. One improvement we saw this time was the tent sites have been graveled where you'd park the car, and there were new fire rings at each site. The bathrooms looked like they were getting more attention than the last time we were here as well. Although they're still not what I would call clean, they're not the worst we've seen. After 30 years they could definitely use an overhaul. What used to be a nice family resort with activities is now a tired place filled with permanent trailers that have taken up the best full-hookup sites and left the rest of us members with a long walk, a street to cross to get to the amenities, and only electric and water with the privilege of paying for the honey wagon. We're disappointed, but since it's the closest one to the kids and grandkids we'll be coming back to try to get our money's worth out of the dues we've paid over 28 years. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Campground is about 8 miles from Monroe on a road that is 35 mph with several 20-25 mph curves and a very steep hill. There is a Walmart and Fred Meyer in Monroe, along with a Tractor Supply Co. which is an excellent source for propane.

So much wrong with this place that 2000 characters won't cover it! Beautiful setting is my only compliment. Sites (and we had reservations) are first-come-first served. So we found a full hookup site but it was a race to the office with someone else, and they won. We ended up in a site with no sewer and no wifi for same price. Had to be sneaky to even secure this site. 5-6 people looking for sites at same time on a Wednesday meant "grab and run". We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Motorhome.

Absolutely will NOT be back. Grass is overgrown everywhere. There are no defined separation of sites because of this, and people had their tents, dogs and law chairs touching our slideouts. Garbage and dog poop scattered around. Rude employees. Scolded at check in for pulling ahead 2 feet further than marked. Scolded at the pool for letting our baby in the adult pool that was not marked anywhere. I guess we are just supposed to know these things. We follow rules in life. All of them. I do not like being scolded by rude and unhappy employees like I'm a felon. Bathrooms were disguising (in the am) amenities are in disrepair. We will not be coming back. Stayed for Memorial Day weekend expecting to get full hook up sites for the amount of money we were charged a night, only to find out that all sites are first come first served. We ended up across the street in a lot where the grass hadn't been mowed in weeks, no trimming of the BlackBerry vines so we could utilize our full space. We only had water and power, no sewer. Normally I would only pay about $32 a night for that type of accommodations, but we drove a good distance and had no choice but to stay. What you are looking at on the website isn't what you get in real life. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Muddy grass in front of the RV site. Bathroom is dirty. The laundry room was not opened on time twice when we were there. The office never picks up the phone when you have an emergency. The visitor parking is always parked by an employee, so I got chewed out if I park in the visitor, the manager will charge me $5. The manager also charged double the price for sewage pump on a scheduled day. Even though thousand trail advertised free wifi, we never get wifi connected. Since we've been Leisure Time members for over 30 years, this was the logical choice when visiting family in the area for the holidays. We used to take the kids tent camping there decades ago, and in the summer it was an ok place with lots of activities. However, things have changed for us and we're now full-timers with a 45' fifth wheel and a HDT. There was no way we could fit on the FHU side, and any spaces we might have fit in were taken up by permanent residents or had cabins on them - not an option when we purchased our membership. We wound up on the river side and still had a challenging time backing into our spot because the road's not very wide. Everything was muddy - kind of a given in Washington in winter, so you would think they might have upgraded with some pavement in the last 3 decades. Our neighbors on one side were in a decrepit Class C with tarps on the top, and a tent that collapsed during a snow event. The teenage son was attending school from there, so I'm guessing they're pretty permanent. We stayed our two weeks, and the manager was terrific and let us stay a couple extra days so we could take care of some business, and also scheduled the honey wagon for no charge. He was very accommodating to us. The road to the park is very winding and steep in places, so I would recommend larger rigs go in from the Sultan side, it's not quite as risky. All the sites on the river side are open, but the line of trees along the road behind them means you're in the shade all day unless some sun (when there is any) peeks through the trees. That means everything stays pretty soggy in the winter, there's no way for it to dry out because the sun can't warm anything up. Oh, and there was plastic garbage in one of the women's toilets for several days, which indicates to me it wasn't cleaned. One of the other stalls ran out of toilet paper for two days, which I consider unacceptable. The hot tub closed after we'd been there two days for the rest of the season. We camped at Thousand Trails-Thunderbird Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

You approach on a very windy road. The place needs a bit of work. It appears lots of people are staying long term. There doe not seem to be a cleanliness of rv policy. The little class C beside ours was covered with mildew and algae. the area we stayed near the river had nice views but it looked a bit sketchy. Hot tub was nice though. This is a nice, we'll run park. It has gotten a lot of bad reviews and I'm not sure why. The staff does an excellent job of keeping the park operating as it should. It's very clean in the common areas and the pools are super clean and nice. There is an adult only pool that was great! Sites are not super big but we had plenty of room. We were lucky to get a sewer site on the non-River side and we were very happy there. It's close to Seattle and much more. It's really nice to be in a Thousand Trails where the rangers do what they should and the amenities are not broken or old. Good job Thunderbird!
