Overall Rating:

Salt Creek is a County run park that is about as far west as a big rig should consider traveling. From here you can travel to the NW corner of the 'lower 48' and visit some of the Indian reservation areas to the west of Port Angeles. This park is ON the straights of Juan de Fuca that separate the USA from Canada. While you ARE "waterfront", you are NOT "on the water" - that is, there is an area to climb down rocks to the water, but if you have a boat or kayak and wish to put it into the water, you'll have to travel a bit to find a good spot to do this. Verizon was spotty - AND - you're likely to connect to a Canadian cell tower. With the new Verizon plans, you can easily get 512mb data use daily when connecting to Canadian cell towers. Port Angeles is 20 minutes to the east. Good restaurants, cafes, marine aquarium, place to put into the water with a kayak, bike/walking path along the water front (runs for miles.) Has 2 Safeways. In the campground, the front row (closest to the water) is "first come, first served, max stay 14 days." I was advised to arrive early and if necessary wait until someone pulls out of their spot. This is a VERY popular park and I stayed here in late September arriving on a Sunday - I was able to secure a site quickly and there were 2 others open at that time. There are about 15 of these type of (non-reservation) sites. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

We enjoyed our stay in a long pull-through site (36) overlooking the Strait. The lower terrace is first come, first served. The second and third terraces and the handful of pull-throughs can be reserved. Maneuvering a 45' motorhome is tight in some areas of the park. Nice variety of beaches (tide pools, sand) just a few steps away. The drive-through WW2 bunker is impressive. We continued on Hwy 112 west - slow going for a large MH. RV sites are part of a larger camping park along the northern coast. Some RV sites have direct view of Strait of Juan de Fuca. Some sites are in a forested section. Quiet family camping near Fort Angeles and northern Olympic National Park attractions. The Salt Creek Recreation Area is a destination within itself with its military history and coastal and beach access at low tide. No sewer service at any sites but it does have a dumping station. Very friendly and helpful ranger and park hosts. Clean, well maintained camping and day use park. We stayed here in a 40 foot motorhome. Would definitely stay here again. We stayed here last week. Both pros and cons, many the same as other reviewers. The views are spectacular. If you have a back window in your rv/trailer I would suggest staying in spaces 25-32.these are back in and have a wonderful view of the water. All the other sites are back in also but situated so,the back of the rig is not facing the water. There are trails throughout the park and also, stairs going down to,the beach. Watch the tides....some are not accessible at high tide. There are tide tables posted at kiosks around the park but they were from 2017 We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is just an excellent place to stay. The other reviews appear to cover most of the points I might have mentioned. The proximity to the water can make it a bit chilly when it's warmer inland. The dry spaces are among the trees and are somewhat more private, but are generally not very long. Some of them have views of the Strait. We stayed in sites 26 and 36. We picked site 26 so we could back in our trailer and view the Strait from our rear-dinette (the rear of sites 25 through 32 face the Strait). We picked site 36 for our last night because that's what was available, but it turned out to have a nice view of the Strait and the sunset through the trees. The reservation fee adds $10 to the nightly rates. The reservation site is pretty good in showing the mapping and informing you of the site length. If you pick "sewer" as an amenity, there will be no sites because none are actually sewered except for the host site. There is a dump station on the site exit roadway. The park is enjoyable and includes some amenities for kids. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

We were very taken by the Makah Museum (Makah Cultural and Research Center). We like to treat ourselves to dinner at Michael's Seafood & Steakhouse in Port Angeles when we are up this direction.

We loved it there! Alot of big rig friendly spots! Incredible views. Couldn't get our satelite to work there, think we were blocked by trees but plenty of OTA channels. Water and electric only. We moved here and it was so much nicer then in town camping. Did I mention the view was great- saw an eagle in the tree and deer walking through campground. Looks like it fills up on weekends, we were there mid week without a reservation in the off season. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Salt Creek is a popular campground and the utility sites are wide, sunny and have great views of the Sound. Check with the ranger or host before choosing a site as the water wasn't working in a couple of them while we were there. The dry area is beautiful, with a couple deer meandering around. but the sites are short and some are not close to level. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Would suggest that you make sure you have all that you need before arriving. Its about a half hour drive to Port Angeles and while the town of Joyce does have a general store, its rather small.

Great rv park overlooking the straits and from our site, we had a great view.Sites 6 to 32 are tiered, and have views of the straits. Sites 52 to 92 are in a heavily treed area and are larger and give more privacy, but no views. Hookups were fine and nice level site. There are black tail deer wandering around the park, and some nice trails with great views of the straits. As others said, be careful of the cell phone service, since it is a Canadian tower. My wife said she had great service and called our daughter everyday. I told her I shut off international data roaming on my phone and had no service, so guess who got a huge bill from ATT? Be warned. If we knew how nice this park was, we probably would have stayed longer. We saw Crescent Beach from one of the trails, and it looked very nice, but not accessible from the trail. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Our only complaint about this park was that the sites are very close together in the terraced view area. Our 39 ft fifth wheel fit into our space but was too close to allow us to use the fire pit which we noticed with several other larger units. The water and electricity were well located and worked perfectly. Verizon cell and Wifi are provided by a Canadian service so you need to be sure that you either have international or be willing to pay big bucks. Once you're out on Hwy 101 American Verizon service returns. There was OTA television from Canada. There are a multitude of beautiful walking trails all around the park. The Crescent Beach day area is walkable from the park. It is about a 30-minute drive into Port Angeles which is a good-sized city as well as the visitor center for Olympic National Park. We had limited view from the middle row of the terrace. If you have a large rear window the upper tier would be the best and if your window is over the front the bottom row would be the best for view. As it turned out, it was foggy most of the time so so no one had a view. We would definitely stay at this park again if we were in the area. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Be sure to look at the site specifications on the website as it will tell you how much overhang beyond the bumper stop is available for larger rigs. We had a wonderful meal at Kokopelli restaurant in Port Angeles. There is a very small farmers market in Port Angeles on Saturday morning.

July 9, 10, partial hookups, back-in overlooking the Strait of Juan De Fuca. $30, 92 sites and 39 with water and electric. Restrooms with coin-operated showers This county park which was an old fort is located On the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Crescent Bay. Some of the RV sites (all sizes) overlook the Strait and Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada. Sites are close together but some of the tent sites are very spacious. Small units can fit in the no hookups sites and there were a couple of sites for big RV's. The park has the campground, day use area, steps down to explore the tidepools, a huge beach on the lake and Camp Hayden WW 2 bunker sites to explore. The park is on 198 acres with basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, softball and play areas. The tidepools are very interesting . Whales are spotted off the shore as well as Turkey Vultures, Orcas, and many birds like Bald Eagles. It is on the birding trail. One can kayak, scuba dive, surf and mountain bike here. We enjoyed our site looking out to the Strait where we could see Vancouver Island and watch the shipping lane with tankers, cruise ships, private boats and the ferries. Many sites can be reserved but there are a number of sites that are first come. Check out time is 1. We camped here two nights and it seems the weekend was full but there were sites available during the week. GPS may try to take you to a private campground so make sure you put in Salt Creek Recreational Area. Good stay! We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

RV sites are very close together. The sites facing the Straits of Juan de Fuca are on three tiers. The lower tier (first come, first serve) have the best view, the middle tier view is blocked by the lower tier, and the upper tier has a good view. There's plenty of places to walk around the park. They also have a very nice playground with modern equipment for the kids. Our Verizon router was spotty but we did end up with a fair internet connection. Our AT&T cell phones had no service. Our fire ring was underneath the corner of our rig so was unusable. We barely had room for our 32' MH and toad but we made it fit. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We've stayed at Salt Creek numerous times. What we love most about it are the beautiful views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the easy access to the interesting beach and tide pools. What we like least is how close you are to your neighbors!

There are two sections to this campground. Sites #1 to #51 are up on a high exposed bluff. Of those sites, #33 to #39 are pull-through, while #1 to #32 are back-in. Sites #6 to #32 are arranged on terraces so that theoretically every site will have a view. Be aware though that depending on what kind of rig you have you may end up without a view. For example, we stayed in site #17 which put the large front windows of our trailer facing the view (albeit over the top of our truck). If we had taken one of the sites in the upper terrace (#25 to #32) the back of our trailer with its tiny window would have been facing the view. This is because of the direction of the traffic flow. So if in doubt, when making a reservation, ask! We camped during a very stormy few days and so the campground was not crowded and we were able to pick a spot that worked well for us without a reservation.

There is another section of the campground that is down closer to the water where sites #52 to #92 are located. These sites are nestled in the woods and some have views, but many do not. They're pretty, but can be dark on rainy or cloudy days and they're not suitable for large rigs. There are no hook-ups in the lower loop. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

A side trip out to the small communities of Clallam Bay, Sekiu and the Makah Indian Reservation is well worth it for the stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With a permit from the Makahs you can hike out to Cape Flattery, the most north-westerly point in the lower 48 states.

We love this park! Made reservations for 3 nights, stayed 7 and are already planning our return. Extremely clean grounds, nice/helpful Rangers on staff. We turned off phones and electronics to ensure we didn't pick up a Canadian tower and instead, we went tide pooling, hiking, explored and enjoyed the incredible area. We camped in a 35' motor home plus toad and there were larger rigs than we are. Neighbor is relatively nearby but because the way the park is tiered, we did not feel cramped and our forward view was spacious and spectacular. Busy on the weekend but quiet at night. Highly recommend, We would rank Salt Creek in our top 3 most favorite campgrounds in the US! We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
