As others have written, very nice but basic BLM campground. Site #1 was perfect for our 35' motorhome - we drove the "wrong way" in order to pull into site so we could see the water. As the area is very dry (sagebrush), having paved road and sites is very helpful. Reservations needed for sites with view but there are 4 sites for 1st come, 1st served. Most are level, all with picnic table and fire pits. No water is available; come with water tank full and waste empty. We did cross the road, near the tent camping area and hike up the hill. We did not see any, but this area could have rattlesnakes - just a word of caution. Big Pine is largest campground along Yakima River, but Umtanum BLM has a few sites for RVs that are gravel, not paved. Umtanum is a few miles towards Ellensburg and has a bridge across the river with a nice trail along the creek. Overall, excellent value and most scenic of Yakima or Ellensburg parks. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

A nice overnight or in our case, almost a week. Immediately off the highway, sites and roads are paved. Only the first few sites have a view of the river and shade and one side of the campground is next to the highway but traffic is minimal at night. To make us fulltime rv'ers feel at home there is a train across the river but no horns. Several sites for big rigs and swing room should not be an issue. We did have to dodge some curbs backing into our site but that was self inflicted because we wanted a river view. There are no utilities and no water, only pit toilets. As another reviewer mentioned, nothing to do in the immediate are but fish or read a good book. No Verizon. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This BLM campground is located right on the Yakima River, sandwiched between the highway and the river and a railroad on the other side. Traffic died down at night and there was only one train rumbling through about every two hours.

The sites are all paved and very level. Some are very large. Most are in the open sun, only a few are somewhat shaded. Reasonable space between the sites which offers some privacy. We were surprised to find this campground well booked (most sites are reservable) for the upcoming weekend. Well, it was fishing season and there is a boat launch right from the campground.

Pit toilets are available but we couldn't locate a water tap.

Overall excellent value for money and we will stay again. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

I rate parks on what they have not what they are missing. For a BLM campground without services this is a great park for the spring and fall. It is located on the Yakima River. I imagine in the summer the temperatures would be very high. The sites are all paved and very large 60+feet and very level. There are a few pull thru. There are 2 extremely clean pit johns.

Several sites are located under huge ponderosa pines that provide great shade. The only shortcoming is lack of other things to do. There is one hiking trail up a small mountain and I guess if you are a fisherman this would be a great place. We stayed in April before the season started so there was no charge. home. Overall Rating:

This is a deceptively large BLM campground right on the Yakima River. Most of the riverfront sites have at least some shade. The sites are concrete pads and vary in size and amount of shade but most appear to be big enough to accommodate most big rigs. There are very nice sites all along the river and many more in the inner area. No hook ups, and very little Verizon service, but if you are looking for a nice quiet spot on the river, this is it, and at $15/night ($7.50 with senior pass) it's a deal. There are also three other campgrounds on the river in the Yakima Canyon, but we thought this one was the nicest. Didn't use the restrooms, so can't comment, but the rest of the campground was nice and clean. Reservations are available for this campground, but it's big enough that I doubt it ever fills up completely so it's a good bet for an overnight stop in the area. For longer than that, I think it would pay to reserve in the summer on the weekend in order to get a nice riverfront spot. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

The rate reflects my National Park access pass. This is a dry campsite that sits on the Yakima River. The park only had 5 campers in it including the host. We packed into a huge site next to the river and were very pleased. We would definitely stay here again! We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

Overall Rating:

Great park for birdwatching, rafting, fishing, hiking, kicking back, and getting away from it all. Spectacular scenery. Seven day limit. Verizon signal weak and sometimes unreliable. No facilities except vault toilets and dumpsters. Bring your own water. Small blacktop boat ramp. Day use picnic sites. Sites and roads are good level blacktop with picnic tables (all wheelchair accessible) and fire rings. Many are suitable for big rigs. Some partially shaded, some in full sun. A few pull-throughs, several tent sites. On site host. Price reflects senior access pass rate. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This park and recreation area is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The campground was completely reconstructed and paved last year. New fire pits, new tables and restrooms. The campground sites have paved pads and have separated paved pedestrian sidewalks, which were curbed and perfect for my toddlers to ride their bicycles on. Campground has plentiful river access and a nice sand ramp boat launch. Also a river viewing platform with rails is available. The scenery is breathtaking. Campground is open all year and is free with the exception of May 15th thru Labor Day Weekend. Cellular reception was great, and the campground has an emergency satellite phone mounted in the main information area. We camped at BLM - Big Pines Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
