I stayed here 3 nights in site 35 while passing through in a 27 foot motorhome with tow car. I really liked this park. The price reflects payment for a premium site - one of the ones that are spaced around two circular drives. It was definitely worth the extra money. The sites are spacious and you have a large area behind and to the side of your camper that is all yours. The pad is paved and level. The non-premium sites are lined up in a row quite close together. Site 35 was particularly nice because it backed up to a wooded area and had shade much of the day. This is an urban park which is an oasis of green grass and large shade trees located in the flood plain of the Yakima River. It has a very large day use area with a few nature trails. Great for walking the dog. There were mosquitos but not hordes of them. There are also some nature trails in a wilderness area between the dike and the river. The park was very quiet and very well maintained. Lots of ranger presence. Verizon service was excellent. The price does not reflect the $8 reservation fee and an additional one-time $5 non-resident fee. But they don't charge extra for a tow vehicle. Water and electricity all worked well. I did not use the restrooms. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

I made a day trip to Mount Rainier National Park while I was staying here. Long drive but worth it. Also saw a mountain lion while walking the dog in the wilderness hiking trails by the river. Not bad for an urban park that is less than 10 minutes from a Walmart.

We wanted to stay 3 nights to visit the nearby national park so we tried to make reservations on line but the website wasn't working correctly. We emailed the park directly but never received a reply. Because our reservation at another park was fouled up, we had to find a site when we arrived in the area. Fortunately, there was a site available for the 3 nights we needed as there aren't many options in the area. The park is located in town. It is a short drive from I-82 (Exit 33 or 34) along secondary streets. The park was undergoing some road work so there were some rough obstacles to overcome but the project was being finished on the day we departed. The interior roads & back in parking pads are paved. The interior roads and turns are sufficient to maneuver larger RV's. The sites are a mixture of back-ins and P/T's. Sites had sufficient room for opening slides. This park seems to understand the simple concept of the importance of a flat, level parking pad as most of the them were level but some required blocking. The camp loops (sites 17 - 36) have full hook ups - water, electricity (50/30/20 AMP), & sewer. The utility connections were towards the center of the sites. The sewer connection fitting was at ground level making it easy to establish a downhill flow depending on the discharge point. Distance and grassy areas establish privacy between the sites. All sites have an outside table & fire pits. Orientation of the sites caused some not to have any shade on passenger side. The camp loop sites had a few trees that could interfere with satellite reception depending on site assignment and dish configuration. The P/T's were under an extensive tree canopy making satellite reception difficult at best. No cable. The park information didn't mention anything about broadcast channels. Didn't try to get any broadcast channels. No park provided WiFi. Our Verizon WiFi hotspot worked well. Didn't try the NET10 phone. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

We're pulling a trailer w/car on it ...60ft or so. Just fit in pull through although hookups are at entrance to site. Long way to connect if you have a trailer behind you.

We had to back up to dump on the way out.

Oh....BTW.....DON'T PARK ON THE GRASS (although we did the 1st night) we were informed that the fine was $250 for doing that.

Doesn't hurt that the game warden likes pizza!!!!!

We had fun but no satellite TV at all in the pull through sites. (1-16)

Try and get a different one that's open for tv. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

We have stayed at this park many times over the last 15 years and it is a favorite lunch stop when traveling through the area.

I recommend the circular, full hookup, backin sites. They are paved, fairly level and much more space between the sites than the pull through sites. These sites back up to a wild life area featuring a mountain bike trail and miles of level foot trails through trees and brush. The campground also features a pretty pond with a short trail going around it, lots of birds and pond turtles. Within a mile of the SP entrance, you can access miles of paved bike trails that go in each direction stretching from Union Gap to Fruitvale or Selah depending on your route.

I find the staff very nice and accommodating. The bathrooms are typical of a state park and cleaned daily. My only complaint is the last 2 years of visiting this park we've encountered several homeless people here. One actually parked a really old van next to us in a vacant site around 11:00 at night then left early the next day, I expect to avoid paying. We've never had any issues and they have a right to use the park too, but Yakima is known to be a bit rough so I've been more wary about leaving personal stuff out and locking the trailer door even for a short walk. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Normally, I wait until we leave a location before posting a review. In some cases, the first impressions are the worse and can improve a bit over time. I can not imagine our impression of this Washington state park improving at all, plus I wanted to get a warning out early in case others may be considering this place. First off, this park is NOT big rig friendly! Very tight turns and multiple low hanging tree branches which you will scrape against. Pull-through sites are very, very narrow, again with really tight turns on the approach. If you even think about driving over grass (and with a big rig, there is no way around it), you will be immediately assaulted by by the park Gestapo, harassed, threatened, and insulted. I was told I need to take driving lessons for a rig our size. FYI, but I have, and have been driving big rigs for many years. Check-in person was very, very rude to my wife. All this for $40/night. If we could get a refund, I'd be happy to pay twice that for a big rig friendly location without the attitudes of the ranger/hosts/volunteers here. In the last several years, we have stayed at one or two worse state parks, but at least in those parks, the employees/volunteers were friendly, accommodating, and helpful. We really like staying at state parks, and are hoping this is not representative of the rest WA state park system. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

We were in site 33. Arrived a little early, but they would not let us on before 2:30 even though the park was almost empty. Our site, including the picnic table, was soaked because they water until 2:30. The back-in sites are fairly level asphalt and hook ups are well placed. Park is small and fairly quiet. Probably won't be back. Not a lot of value or customer service. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Small state park on the edge of Yakima, WA. Easy access from I-82. Pull through sites are adequate size if you are less than 55' in length. Utilities are placed at the rear of the sites requiring long sewer hose for connection. Site is asphalt and reasonably level with only slight use of the leveling jacks. All pull through sites are partially shaded. The back in sites are much larger but some are much less shaded. The park is quiet and patrolled by the park ranger on a regular basis. The only drawback is the site pricing, $42 for site with no pool, or WIFI, or cable is unreasonable. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

We stopped here on an overnight trip from Portland to Winthrop. It was still pretty much winter and the trees had not yet flowered but I'll bet when there is shade, it's very pretty here. We just got on of the pull throughs and parked for the night - I'm not sure how it would have been for a longer stay but probably fine. There are a few longer term folks here that have some rather unusual looking trailers, but overall, it was fine. It was easy to find, well marked, safe. We didn't use the restrooms so I can't address that issue. I'm not sure where the guy came up with the $45 figure - you can stay here for $30 with hookups and $20 without hookups so really quite reasonable, I think. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We arrived at dusk and had some trouble locating the pull-thru sites. When we drove in to the campground, there was a woman sitting behind a road barricade with her lights on and the engine running. Very odd...not a park employee. We found a pull-thru site and were able to hook up without difficulty. Sites are somewhat narrow, but we were the only ones in the pull-thru area, so no big deal. There was a fire pit and picnic table for each site, with some grass in between. I don't even want to think about how unpleasant it would be to use the fire pit with it being only a couple of feet away from the motorhome door. The restrooms are old, but were clean and smelled of bleach as though they had just been cleaned. Showers require tokens and there is a sign saying there may not be anyone from whom to purchase tokens due to staff cutbacks. In the morning, the same woman who was sitting in the white Hyundai the previous evening was sitting in her running car, lights on, almost directly in front of our site. She sat there immobile for at least 15 minutes. We sneaked out to disconnect and drove out. When we stopped at the entrance building to turn in our payment envelope, she drove out of the park. My suspicion is drug dealing, since there is no security in the park and it's certainly close enough to neighborhoods for people to stop in for a quick buy. There were only a handful of other campers this time of year and I didn't feel completely safe. We stayed for free because we have a Washington disabled veteran card. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

Yakima Sportman SP is an older state park that has seen better days. It is way overpriced at $45 especially considering the lack of amenities and deferred maintenance/updating needed. The sites are level, but there are no trees or shrubs for privacy barriers between them. The bathrooms require tokens and don't always function properly. There are only 2 shower buildings and one was not functional and the other was "iffy" per the attendant. If you are in need of an overnight/emergency spot that is quiet and off the highway but with easy access, this is ok, but I can't imagine staying here as a destination. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

A real gem - nice sites, friendly park staff, very well maintained grounds, and great location. Close to downtown but also out to Yakima Valley vineyards and their great red wines! I had vehicle problems and wound up staying 5 nights. Good walking trails along the dyke. My only complaint is it's expensive. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is an urban campground located within the city limits of Yakima. Our campsite did have full hook ups but we only connected to electric. The hook ups were located at the very rear of the site and not convenient. Verizon cell/mifi worked well. I would not call this campground big rig friendly for several reasons. We had a pull thru site that was long enough but so narrow that we barely missed the fire pit with the truck (on the right) and the utilities with the 5th wheel (on the left). The utilities have concrete barriers that you find in parking lots to protect them because I am sure they have been taken out by RVers trying to park. The trees desperately need trimming and we felt fortunate to escape without roof damage. We talked to the ranger about it and he was ambivalent at best. Watering occurs every day which makes the grass green but floods the streets and hits your vehicle as you drive to your site. We would not stay here again. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great welcome from the ranger when we checked in. I think it was $38 but it may have been a little cheaper. Very pleasant and well set up site in a wooded and flat park setting. Not many vans around but lots of sites were flagged as booked for the coming weekend, so it would be hard to get casual camping then. Handy for Yakima and Tuppenish - well worth a visit for the murals. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Motorhome.

Beautiful campground. Level area's, shade tree's, full hookup's and plenty of room for all size rigs. All spots were very private. Rates are 40.00 for weekends after May 1 and 37.00 for week days. I would stay there again without hesitation even if the rates were high. Must buy tokens for showers. We camped at Yakima Sportsman State Park in a Travel Trailer.
