This FREE (the review site won't let me put $0) "primitive" campground run by the NPS was a great place to stay for a few days while exploring the New River Gorge National River area. The NPS runs several primitive campgrounds in this area (as well as one actual paid campground). From the searching I did for reviews, this one seemed to be the most well liked. Off the main highway, it is about 2 miles down a narrow road that is paved most of the way. This would be a challenge for bigger rigs. Once you make it into the camp there are 11 sites of different sizes. We only had neighbors for one night and then had the entire campground to ourselves for the other two. It is right near the river and you can hear that going by. People who aren't camping do come by during the day as there is a day use area there as well. It also is home to one of the nicest multi-stall pit toilets I have ever had the pleasure of using. If you are in a smaller rig and don't mind dry camping, this campground is well worth checking out. We camped at New River Gorge National River, Army Camp Campground NPS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Make sure to check out the New River Gorge Bridge, even though it was under construction at the time it is still iconic.
