I have been on a mission to visit every state park in West Virginia. This past weekend I felt my mission was a boondoggle. I visited a park that is either mismanaged or woefully underfunded (I'm waiting for the park superintendent to contact me). I asked to speak with the park superintendent but was told he was unavailable. DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE MAPS if driving to the park from the Charleston,WV area. The app will route you on a back country road which is not suitable for motorhomes or trucks pulling a camper. Make sure you travel on Rt. 20 through Hinton. On a side note, make sure your brakes are in tip-top condition before driving to Bluestone S.P. or Pipestem S.P.. There is NO CAMPGROUND MAP on the park website. This makes planning a visit somewhat of a crap shoot. The bathhouse at Meador Campground is a prime example of poor maintenance. Insufficient water pressure. No latches on any of the toilet stalls. The toilet bolts on every toilet in the Men's room are broken. The door frame to the handicap shower was broken and the only bench was a plastic picnic car. There are no family bathrooms in the entire park. This made bathing my infant daughter an especially difficult task for my wife. The hiking trails are in horrible condition. The Overlook Trail ascending the mountainside, from Meador Campground to the top of the ridge, has two trees completely blocking the trail and a washout towards the top that made the trail extremely dangerous. I question whether or not the the park staff are actively maintaining the trails. The two river access points in Meador are is poor condition. A kayak or canoe could be launched but you will have to walk through someone's campsite in order to do so. We camped at Bluestone State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The only reason to stay at Bluestone State Park is if Pipesteam State Park is filled to capacity.

Overall Rating:

Site 29, level, woody, which means no grass, which means mostly gravel/dirt, good spacing. Bathroom and showers old and run down, clean but yucky-looking. We like to stay on water, or at least have a view of the water. I'm finding I can't trust the campground maps, or descriptions. The only spots on the water have no hook ups. Nice gift shop in office. No Air TV, had cell service (AT&T), WiFi only available in office, which is over a mile from campsites. We camped at Bluestone State Park in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

This was a stop on our 17 state journey, so just stayed one night. The area is pretty, but a long winding drive. Almost to the point we thought we were lost. Would have liked to explore the New River. The office/store is more than a mile away from the campsite.

Overall Rating:

Campground was lovely although the roads coming in from the highway are steep and have sharp curves. I dragged the hitch and bars several times. The fire pits at several sites I looked at were full of trash from the previous occupants, and I was getting there right at dusk just before the office closed. There is a nice walking path along the river but it is also full of trash, including evidence of illegal fishing (bottles, line and plastic soda lids) that are a hazard to all animals. They need to do a big cleanup here and not just mow the grass. We camped at Bluestone State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We did not stay here but drove through the campground in our 37' 5th wheel. The road in was very windy. We made it OK but decided we probably wouldn't do it again. The sites seemed short for a larger rig. There is electric hookup, but the water is at spigots throughout the campground. Other than that it's a pretty campground, had some water access, had nice shady sites, and seemed quiet. I'm not sure what the nightly rate is because we didn't stay there. We camped at Bluestone State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
