We stayed here for 4 days to attend graduation at UW. It was a very convenient and pleasant location, despite rain (sometimes very heavy) almost all weekend. This became relevant by Monday--when we left. The park was being closed due to standing water and mud affecting virtually every campsite and the road through the park. However, this kind of thing is not the fault of anyone, and is just a fact of the terrain of the park if it rains a lot. Otherwise, we thought it was an excellent location while visiting Madison (we rented a car to get around town and left our motorhome parked safely at the campground). There is a lot of space between campsites, and grass everywhere, so it's very relaxing. The sites have gravel bases, not just grass, so there's a firm base under your RV, and grass if you are in a tent. It was quiet despite the nearby road. The lake is beautiful and, if you have a boat, you will enjoy it (there is a boat launch). As others have noted, the shower facilities are very basic but the hot water worked fine which is what matters to us! The bath house is not too close to the campground so it would be a short hike for tenters in the middle of the night. The dump and fresh water spigots are adjacent to the bath house (no fresh water at the sites.) There is a small playground and some boat tie-ups and a small swimming beach. The phone reception came in strongly. It took less than 15 minutes to drive to the UW campus and nearby restaurants. The ranger came through every day (there was no host during our weekend) and we felt very safe. We would not hesitate to stay here again. - Honeybee8888

Bathrooms needed work and showers definitely needed more work. The campground is small, near a road. We were visiting friends and this park made everything convenient. We didn't spend too much time hanging around the park. - myo

Some of the sites are right angle to the road, making it difficult to back into without traveling on the grass. Fill with water at the restrooms-shower-dump area before setting up. A small park with some children's playgrounds. - stetwood

I think it was a seasonal campground until the new owners took over. They do need to trim dead trees that could be an issue with a storm. Our site was a good size and we were able to put a large screen house on it. Owners (woman) let seasonal campers do whatever they want, not following rules. DOGS OFF LEASHES! No pool. Pretty boring. I didn't find anything special about this campground. - tammiann61

We camped at Fireside to be more in the "woods" and real camping. The grounds are quiet, and the sites were spacious, although ours was a bit sandy. All was functional at our full hookup site. The owners are very helpful and friendly, in fact were so kind as to mail us back our water pressure regulator after we forgot it on the spigot when we left. The playground area kept the grand kids busy and they have some kids activities on the weekend. - camperkatie

Owners have been making great improvements at the camp ground. They lead you to your site and deliver the firewood to you. - Jmkjr72

Not sure I could ever recommend this place. I called for a space as we were traveling through and specifically asked for a pull-through full hookup as I was towing and did not want to disconnect. I wanted to pull out early the next morning. I was told by the person answering the phone that that yes we have a site in our hanger section. I happened to be on their website so I looked a the map and said, wow, those are long pull-through sites and she said yes they were. So it was clear that I was expecting a pull through site.
Imagine my surprise when we arrive and I have a back in. I was not happy and had a conversation with a nice person who brought the papers to my site. Her and the person I had spoken to previously had a conversation over the radio and I was basically called a liar.
We ended up staying but here is the deal. The hanger section is the furthest away from the "facilities" as it could possibly be. They have 1 or 2 porta potties, yes, porta potties that are close.
We drove over to the "beach" and pool. You meander through so many "permanent" trailers stacked on top of each other. I am unsure I could have driven my 38' motorhome through all the cars, campers, golf carts, tents. We didn't even get out of the car when we got to the beach as their was no where to park.
This place is a fire bomb waiting to happen. Once camper/trailer or campfire problem and it will be a nightmare. How they can stuff that many in one area with one road in or out and no way to move between is beyond me. Any fire marshal would shut them down. - WYDan

90 to 95 percent were seasonal permanent sites. Staff was friendly but everyone else was drunk. We had a 3 day min.stay but left after the 2nd night of listening to noisy golf carts and cussing drunks till 3 or 4 in the morning. The pool was nice but at 9 in the morning you go there and every lounge chair (about 40 or so) had beach towels on them even though there were only 2 people in the pool so you have to sit on the concrete. The lake looked nice but smelled awful due to all the algae and I mean a lot of it washing up on shore. My daughter came back to the camper with her suit all green. We were told that the owner was across the road from us so we know they heard all the noise at night but did nothing because the drunken rednecks were regulars and that's fine there are plenty of other campgrounds to go to. Very few rental sites tightly squeezed in near the back of the pool and noisy bar so kids won't get much sleep. If you just want to hang out and get drunk this is the place!! - Roy Abramat

Park had lots of places for children to play, in and out of the water, but for 'retired' adults traveling through, I would not recommend it. Long pull through sites were not very level gravel. Office was located almost a mile from the entrance, on winding roads through lots of permanent campers, which was what the camp consisted of mostly. Only two showers, located 1/2 mile walk from our camp site; Outside porta pots were our closest provided toilets. - wheelen jv
