The lake has been drained to replace the dam. It will remain drained for about two more years. I rated the campground "Excellent" based on the lake being returned. Two paved hiking trails plus others. A couple are very steep including one very high stair case trail. Beautiful waterfall with nearby rock climbing on some days. Permit required. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Just be aware: If you are not a Wisconsin citizen, you pay double. My site was electric only. It was nice, but $40 per night, plus a state park pass is $38 a year, or $13 a night. Nice park, but you could stay at a commercial park with full hookup for less. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

As others have said, the price on the surface doesn't look bad but by the time you add the daily fee, it is as high as other campgrounds and only for electricity. That being said, this was the perfect location for us to visit friends in town. We were in loop 200 and had to go to 100 for the showers. Roads were good for our big rig and we had a pull through.Plenty of room for our 40 foot RV and the tow. Showers were hot and bathrooms were clean. It was a quiet environment overnight, which was appreciated. We had good cell service (Verizon) and were able to use our satellite. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hudson is a cute downtown. They have summer concerts. Also Stillwater, MN is close and there is a lot going on there. We went on the trolley ride and river boat cruise, as well as shopping.

Rangers and staff at the contact station are very friendly and helpful. There are three campgrounds in the park 100 loop, 200 loop and 300 loop. The 300 loop is heavily wooded and the oldest of the three loops. 100 and 200 loops are much more open and are big rig friendly. Roads are paved and sites are gravel. Water fill is at the dump station outside the 300 loop. Easy in and out of the dump station. Our site was a pull thru with electricity in the 200 loop. Site was quite level and was long. The showers are in the 100 and 300 loops. They are clean and the water was hot. Saw the rangers quite often out on patrol of the campgrounds. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The dam is in need of repair so the lake has been drawn down. The hike to the falls is worth the effort.

We made reservations a month in advance. Upon entry, we were required to purchase out of state pass for motorhome at either $10 a night or $35 for a yearly pass in addition to nightly fee. There are three camping sections with some electric sites in each section with the only water and dump station at campground 300 which is 1 mile down hill from campgrounds 100 and 200. Interior roads are paved with sites level and graveled. Section 300 is the older, heavily treed campground that is not big rig friendly. 100 and 200 are big rig manuverable with little shade. Park rangers are very visible in all sections. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

Wisconsin State Park. There are three separate campgrounds. The older one is down the hill, and most sites in that campground are not large rig friendly. The two new campgrounds are on top of a bluff near a busy county road, but the sites are large and quiet. Some have some shade, but most are open. Park has a nice little lake, a stream with trout, a nature center, lots of trails and a spectacular waterfall. Park is about 20 miles from the Twin Cities. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed in this campground for four nights, over a holiday weekend. The check-in staff that checked is in were extremely personable. You are charged five dollars a day or $25 a year vehicle admission fee for your RV even if you are camping. On the positive side, we were not charged this fee for our tow vehicle. The roads into the campsites are paved with the sites in our section being gravel and grass. We were in site 116 and the site couldn't have been better unless it had water and sewer hookups. The sites are large and roomy. This campground has three sections. The 300 loop is the oldest and appeared to have a more rustic feel when we walked through. The 200 loop was finished in 2011 and seemed to lack the feeling of privacy found in section 100, the last section finished. The numbering system is counterintuitive being backwards in numbering system to year of completion. There is only one camp host at this campground and their site is in section 300, so we never saw him/her/them. The shower house definitely needs some attention. I did figure out, on our last day, that it was cleaned once a day around noon. Given the volume of folks using it, it would have been helpful to have someone check on it a couple of times a day on the weekend. By looking in the corners and edges of the shower stall, I could tell that attention to the cleaning details and walls has been lacking. Simply stated, the walls and floors some good old fashion elbow grease (scrubbing). In addition, the air filter is in need of changing. The amount of dust trapped there made it look as though it hasn't been changed since the building was completed. There is only one dump station for the whole campground. The hiking trails at this park are some of the best we have seen. The hidden jewel in the park is a trail to a waterfall located about a mile from loop 100. We found this beauty accidentally. It is down a steep hill, but well worth the walk. The deer and butterflies are abundant. We also saw a couple of hummingbirds. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The park itself is nice – pretty waterfalls – great location for “jumping off” into Minneapolis (say Mall of America). The CG’s obviously been remodeled. I’d give it a higher rating, but 1. the facilities are not well designed for RV’s (our section was section 200 and it had no showers); also, our section had water spigots (they looked brand new) but the spigots were not threaded for hoses, so couldn’t use them to fill up RV tank. So we had to go to section 100 to shower (that section has nice showers, but it has no trees/looks desolate/and is close to the busy road) and to section 300 at the dump station to fill up our water tank. Just seemed like a strange layout to me. Maybe section 300 would be the place to stay, but the office told us that they didn’t have spaces there with electric that would accommodate our RV’s. We arrived on a Tuesday and the CG was virtually empty. And, also on the downside 2. the staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. When we were assigned our spot by the staff, I pointed to the “restroom facility” on the map of our section, and asked if there were showers. The answer was “yes” but it turns out there are not. Then when DW went back to complain, she was scolded for not having the CG pass in her window – we had just checked in and hadn’t even parked in our campsite yet! We camped at Willow River State Park in a Motorhome.

Camped at the lower level site. New upper level just opened. Lower level was very shaded. The upper level was all open with very little shade. Nice trails and beach next to campsites. Paved roads made driving in easy. Have camped here many times and the campgrounds are always full. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is campground in transition. The "old" campground is very limited and not big rig friendly. However, they have converted a parking lot... yes, a parking lot for big rigs. The park only offers a few electric sties, no water or sewer. The State has funded a campground expansion but they will not upgrade to full hook up. Also they only have a one lane dump site with only one fresh water hose. Big line ups here. The park is fantastic, the campground lacks modern equipment. We camped at Willow River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
