7 Parks near Merrill, Wisconsin
Jun 2016 - $28.00
We were concerned about being able to fit and called the night before and were told that 42' RV's (we're 38') have been here, so we were ok. When we arrived the ranger was concerned that our rv wouldn't fit, so now we were concerned again. Ended up, we had no problem getting into our spot, and there were several spots we would have been comfortable in. The road to the campground was tighter than the campground road, so no need to worry once you arrive at the campground.
The sites are hard packed dirt, with lots of space between them and lots of trees overhead, no satellite reception here. Our site was pretty muddy (not the kind you get stuck in, just the kind you track around), since they there had been a lot of rain recently and the mosquitos were pretty bad because of the moisture. Our site was relatively level, but many others weren't.
The park itself is quite nice with lots of hiking trails and the lake for swimming and fishing. We enjoyed exploring the park, but were limited in what we wanted to do because of rain and bugs. Still, it's a nice park and campground and I would return, if in the area. - Uno Mas
Jul 2014 - $24.00
The park is about 10 miles off of Hwy 51. You will go through Merrill and watch your speed (mostly 25mph). Definitely a speed-trap town. The park has a very large station for registration/check-in. Staff was friendly. Roads are very narrow with a lot of low hanging limbs. I would not attempt with a large motorhome. The main road in is very narrow with large trees on both sides. Not a good place for two large rigs to meet. Campground sites are dirt/sand with a picnic table and a fire ring. They are somewhat level. Will have difficulty backing large rigs into some sites. Again, watch for low hanging limbs. Electric at site. Water stations scattered around campground. Dump station on the way out. Bathroom/showers are nasty. Showers are very grubby and not sanitary. Looks like they have not been cleaned all summer. There are two showers in men’s side for the entire campground. ATT phone reception is spotty. Verizon is better. Satellite signal practically impossible due to heavy forest cover. Campground is very busy throughout the summer. Almost everyone is local folks and they love to burn wood. Expect LOTS of smoke day and night. The State of Wisconsin requires all vehicles entering state parks to purchase a park pass. For non-residents, it is $10 per day or $35 annually. This fee is NOT included in your camping fee. I will not stay here again. - Alaska Jim
Jul 2013 - $20.00
Have been to this park a number of times. Bathrooms were clean. The staff is young, friendly, and always helpful. The site we stayed in was very private, the camp grounds is located in the woods. You have to sacrifice level ground for this privacy, but for me the rustic feel and privacy hugely out-weighs the 5 inch drop my site had. We did not get electricity and water this time, but have gotten it in the past. Leave at an odd time, or there will be a long line at the dump station! - Nhans180
Sep 2015 - $20.00
Very nice clean park, was a great place to stay. Only a couple of complaints, we could not find ANY water in the park for drinking water(better fill your tank before arriving). The other complaint was the mens restroom was locked all day on Wed. - bandtgorv
Aug 2015 - $20.00
This is a good place if you need an overnight stay near Wausau. There are not too many campgrounds in the vicinity. Nice back-in spaces in tall trees.
Registration is self-service. We never saw either a park ranger or a camp host. We called ahead to see if space was available. The phone number gets you the county parks department. They said they were sure there were spaces (this was on a weekday) and gave us the restroom combinations.
A great little campground for $20 a night. The only downside is that it is in the middle of a shopping center area so the traffic is challenging, and there is a certain amount of traffic noise all night. - John45
Sep 2014 - $25.00
This is a strange place. The bathrooms are locked, with no explanation. We found a phone number on a bulletin board and called it. That resulted in our getting the combination to get into the bathroom. Weird! It appears they don't want campers to use the bathroom. Their dump is only open from 8 AM - 3 PM! It's fenced off all other hours. And worst of all the traffic and train noise was horrendous. We paid for two nights and left after one sleepless night. We'll never stay there again! - pocabe
Sep 2006 - $24.00
This was our first trip in our first motorhome. It was the best experience. The hosts were very friendly and helpful (as were the other guests). Nice semi-private areas to park with lots of trees, I did not feel like I was at a campground, but in a private area. The area was clean, however the roads are gravel, we manuvered our almost 40' trailer around just fine. Already made reservations for next year. - cathycamping
Jun 2014 - $25.00
This park has rapidly deteriorated over the last few years. Long-term campers have full sized refrigerators and even living room furniture outside making the entire place look trashy. The pit toilets weren't clean, were practically overflowing, and the stench was terrible. The beach has eroded and is becoming overgrown with weeds. The RV sites have become more and more unlevel. The only dump station is in an awkward place in the park where bigger rigs can't fit. Shore power from the pedestal is weak and erratic. A surge blew out one of my outlets and the power was so weak I couldn't run my AC. When I brought these issues to the owner's attention he immediately became very defensive and told me not to come back. Management is terrible! We won't be back to this park! - Cap'n G
Jun 2013 - $25.00
This park is really a mixed bag. The good are great views of Lake Alice from numerous sites and a nice swimming beach. There are boat docks and the fishing in excellent. Many mature trees also provide great shade. The bad is that there are no sites with sewer and the dump station is in a awkward place in the middle of the permanent campers sites. The pads are also extremely un-level (so bring extra boards or leveling blocks). The toilets are strictly "outhouse" style, dumping directly into the holding tank (so, it stinks). However, overall I do like this park since it offers access to beautiful Lake Alice. I'll stay here in the future. - Cap'n G
Aug 2007 - $21.00
We stayed in a campsite right along the water and rented a very nice pontoon boat. People were very friendly and helpful. Check in is at the bar and there's a new shower house with 3 mens and 3 womens showers with on demand hot water heaters--which worked great. Showers are coin operated and clean. My kids loved the beach and spent a lot of time fishing from the boat docks. I've already reserved a campsite for next year. - riverrafter
Jul 2016 - $25.00
The first thing we noticed as we drove in, was that it looked nothing like the website pictures. The second thing was the ANTS. The sites are very sandy and hubby starting spraying to kill ants before we even set up. The site was very unlevel and ended up with the driver side tires off the ground. There were a few pull through sites and these were the only that furnished 50 amp. We would have chosen a grassier site if it was 50 amp.
It is right next to the dirt track and if you go, you get in free when you stay at the park. It was a fun Saturday evening. I believe that this is the same park that is listed as Tomahawk Campground and RV Park on Good Sam.
The sad thing is that this could be a wonderful park with WORK! It needs a lot of trimming and cutting, leveling and pest control. But the sites are good size and some of the back in sites were pretty shaded.
The cell service was bad for Verizon, though the WIFI was decent. We got very few stations on our TV antenna. It is run by a younger couple and the lady was friendly and helpful.
We left 3 days early. If we go back to that area, we will find another place. - GranNan06
Aug 2011 - $26.00
We stayed in this park because of a review. We were not as impressed as that reviewer. The park is in poor condition with sites overgrown with weeds and some overhanging trees, roads narrow and site location sometimes hard to figure out. Full hookups are available. This would be a delightful place to stay if it were given some major TLC. It's sad to see the conditions. - User2176
Oct 2009 - $20.00
We happened on this campground by accident and boy were we happy. Very secluded and natural. Self check in. Honor system. It is adjacent to race way so I imagine it can be noisy during race nights. Sign posted states rates doubled during Harley weekend, when ever that is? We were the only campers in the park, and the water must have been turned off for the season but electricity was on, so we made a bonfire and had a wonderful quiet evening. Level pull through site. No cement in this park. All grassy sites, some with sewer. We will be back if ever in the area. No owners, managers, or staff around but phone number posted if help was needed. - Carl&Barb
Jul 2016 - $32.00
Nice place to spend a couple of nights. During the week, only two other campers in the campground: was nice and quiet. No big issue, but after staying in six other campgrounds, this one was the only one that had pay showers, assuming to save money. (But yet the men's urinal ran 24/7?)
Very friendly and courteous staff. - otdrnt
Aug 2015 - $35.00
.We called this park after showing up at another nearby park at which we had reservations and discovering that they were under a county boil order for contaminated water. We were therefore delighted when the nice lady we got on the phone at Northforest told us to come on in!
They had a very nice playground for kids, shuffleboard, tennis courts, mini golf, and a nice beach. We were in a pleasant area with forest and a lake - the campground was nice and quiet. - Starxd
Aug 2015 - $31.00
The campground is far off the beaten track. The road to it is gravel and almost a mile from the "main" road.
There were a lot of seasonal campers there. Great CG for families; playground, swimming, miniature golf, and a sort of hayride.
Sites are mostly grass. The sites they use for transients are mostly on the ends.
Wi-fi was okay. Cell reception was acceptable. Satellite depends on your site due to trees.
My main issue with the CG was the electric. There was a single box for 2 sites, both 30 amp. My neighbor for the one night I was there was in a Class A. The circuit breaker for the box (a couple of sites away) kept blowing. The manager showed us where it was and I reset it a couple of times, the breaker was Hot to the touch. Not a very good set-up. There were no sewer hook-ups in the transient area and they charge $7 to dump. - jnateg
Oct 2015 - $28.00
No not big rig friendly, but the owners real friendly. Pretty shady little park on a pretty lake.
I was worried that the electrical wire was exposed; it was not in conduit. Was told they had 30 amp. Never did find it, just 110. To cover the electrical switch it had a plastic Folgers coffee can you just lift it up. If it wasn't so late when we arrived I'd have left.
Really pretty lake camp ground was updated with level sites. It's a pretty park. Their website says I should get the winter rate but they said no. - JustDon
Jul 2010 - $30.00
Extremely rustic. Okay for tenting, but not set up for larger rigs. In addition to rate of nearly $30 they charged an additional $5 for using air conditioning. - tdwms
