We stayed at E Star Lake mid month for two nights. Vault toilets clean. Only one other camper. We had wonderful bike rides on nearby paved trails. The loons called all night. Heard a wolf and coyotes too. Swam at the lovely beach. Beautiful water. Quiet. Peaceful. Stars. Moon. Spacious campsites. Only noise was the DNR trucks stocking fish. I watched the 4 month old muskies go in. All I hoped to find in the north part of our magnificent state. We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed at the Musky Lake campground. Very nice wooded sites with about 60' of buffer between each site. Very private sites. Great paved roads and many paved bike and walking trails around. A bike trail that goes from St. Germain to Boulder Junction goes right through it. No hookups at any of the sites. Water is available at the dump station and at hand pumps throughout the park. Nice 3 lane dump station. Clean and well maintained shower houses and bathrooms. Firefly campground across the highway has private shower rooms. We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you have kids a visit to Wildwood Wildlife Park in Minocqua is a worthwhile activity.

Great ice cream shop a few miles east on county N. Right on the bike trail.

Boondocking only sites. Water and dump station at the entrance. Shower house is cleaned daily and the pit toilets are mopped daily. Paved roads and nearby paved bike trails. Kids enjoy the nature center. Budget cuts are limiting the hours and programs at the nature center. We see the park rangers driving through often during the day and night. We stay here for a week every summer. Sites get reserved fast 11 months in advance. We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We stayed at the Crystal Lake Campground as campground hosts from May 1 to May 22, 2008. We had electricity because we were in the host site. There are no sewer or water hookups that we saw, not even in the handicap site next to ours. There is a free dump site at the contact station. They are trying to extend the camping season. In the past the showers and flush toilets were only opened from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This year the showers opened on May 8 and they will try to extend the season into October. There are vault toilets for year around camping. Crystal Lake is a small, spring-fed lake completely surrounded with a sandy beach. There are no private properties on the lake. We saw eagles fishing and heard and saw loons, of course. There is an extensive paved bike trail system that goes from Boulder Junction to St. Germain. There is a nature center on site, right on the bike trail. Entrance fees are: WI resident $25/year, $7/day WI resident age 65 and older $10/year, $3/day Non-resident $35/year, $10/day We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

This is boondocking at it's best. If you want to camp it does not get any better than this. Most sites are large, but few are perfectly level, so bring blocks. The roads are narrow and backing into sites can be a bit of a challenge if you have a large RV. The reservation web site lists site details. This place fills up fast, you have to book almost a year in advance. There are miles of paved bicycle trails and nice sandy shore lines. We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

An annual campground for me, even though there are no hookups available (1 handicap site has electric & water). Arrived on a friday night and was able to camp on a site which was not reserved for that evening and moved to a first-come site the next morning. The ReserveAmerica farce of a system is getting better- but still leaves much to be desired. Even though the state laws were changed, the ranger would not let us camp on a vacated first-come site. We camped at Nrn Highland American Lgn State Forest, Crystal Lake Area Campgrounds in a Tent Trailer.
