We stayed 5 nights in Site 21. It was a quiet and great place to stay! It has electric, 50 amp. You have to fill up your water tank before you set up your site. There are two water spigots. There is a dump station. They have cable TV, and you have to pick up the cable box from the host. We tried hard to hook it up to our TV, but never got it to work, so we used our tailgater satellite. The campground host does not check with anyone when you arrive to see if you need anything. And, he won't help you with the cable hookup! I don't know why they have a host, because they don't do a thing for the campers, or clean the grounds. Other city employees take care of the grounds and clean the bathrooms/showers. There is a 2,000 foot deep artesian well on the grounds that you can fill your water bottles. Many locals of Washburn come each day to fill their 2 to 5 gallon jugs. The showers are dated, but they were clean when I used them. Showers are 25 cents for 3 minutes. It is spacious between campsites. There is a beach and boat launch on the grounds. Be prepared for lots of geese droppings at the beach area. They need to do something about all those geese and poop. They have a nice playground. There are walking and biking trails next to the campground. If in the area, we would return to Thompsons West End Campground. It is close to Ashland for Walmart, Culver's restaurant, fast food, and other services. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We took our truck on the ferry to Madeline Island. There are also tours of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The tours are from Bayfield, 12 miles north. Culver's restaurant in Ashland has great burgers and custard! The Deep Water Grille & South Shore Brewery in Ashland served delicious food and drinks. It is in a really cool building! Ashland is 9 miles south from the campground.

The park is located on the shores of the Chequamegon bay of Lake Superior and you can see the lights of Ashland across the bay at night. The front row of sites are about 75-100 off the water. There is a playground nearby and a sandy beach. Trails for walking start at the park and follow the shoreline into town. We stay here about once a year to visit friends in the area. It would be nice if you could make reservations but it is first come. The park is quiet and quite full on summer weekends. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

This park and her sister park at the other end of town (Memorial Park) are within walking distance of Washburn stores and restaurants and on the way to Bayfield. The park has a natural spring which is frequented by locals for drinking water.

Beautiful city campground on shores of Lake Superior just south of Bayfield. Spacious sites with some shade (if you're looking for heavy forest campground go to Memorial Campground on north side of Washburn). Clean, well-cared for campground with good wifi. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We were looking for a place to stay that would enable us to explore the Bayfield Peninsula and the Apostle Islands. We're self-contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed on weeknights in August.

This campground is a gem. The sites were large. Most had views of Lake Superior. It is self-service with a host - we didn't meet the host. There's good Verizon and AT&T coverage. There's free WiFi with variable speeds, depending upon time of day. Most sites have electric and there's an artesian well (standard hookup available) and dump station near the entrance/exit. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There's a swimming beach and marina a short walk from the campground. The Washburn Lakefront Walking Trail is 1.4 miles between West End and Memorial Campgrounds and includes several beaches, marinas and historical interpretive signs. It's a 6 blocks to the IGA for food/beverages. It's 13 miles to Bayfield for the Apostle Island Cruise and Madeline Ferry. Roads have good shoulders for road biking.

We stayed at the Thompson's West End campground for 4 days. Great location to explorer many areas around Lake Superior. Sites have 30 and 50 amp. Dump station conveniently located near entrance. Showers cost $0.25 for 5 minutes but they are very clean. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Nice park, some sites have Lake Superior views. Corners are tight around loops, watch for posts. We loved the area. Would definately stay here again. Electric only. An artisan well on property to fill our water jugs for drinking water. Dump station and potable water spigots. Many seasonal campers but they keep their sites neat & clean. Fills up most night, at least while we were here in July. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small park that is tight for large rigs; however, it can be done. Roads are narrow, but sites are rather large. Parking for a toad in front of the RV was tight. We found the park to be quiet with friendly local people making up most of the campers. This is a nice area that is close to the Twin Cities. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a nice park first come first serve. We got a site near the lake and beach. Has great view of the lake and so pretty with all grass except the paved roads and gravel pads which handle our big rig and toad. We hauled in our own water but they do have access to fill your tank and an artesian well that all the locals use to obtain drinking water. No sewer for a week is no problem if you have large holding tanks. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

This campground is a great hidden treasure. Campsites are large. We easily fit our truck, 5th wheel & jeep in our site. Other than small pads for camper, the campground is total grass.
Each site has a picnic table. 30 & 50 amps available. Sites are electric only-no water or sewer at campsites. There is a dump station at the entrance of the campground. There are 2 water faucets to fill fresh water tank before pulling into site. We found the water faucets hard to get to, but not impossible. Lack of water and sewer would definitely NOT prevent us from coming back. Campground is directly on the Lake Superior. Asphalt roads through the campground. Some of the corners are tight, however we easily managed to get our Big Rig into a site. Suggest disconnecting toad vehicle and "scouting" sites & campground layout before taking RV in.
There is a nice playground. There are picnic tables throughout the park. A large pavilion is available for an organized event/gathering. There is a boat dock, however, it needs some work-it appears to be unstable. Nice little beach (wish it were larger). There are a couple of places to get directly into Lake Superior from the campground.
In addition to the regular campground, they have an overflow area. There are no hookups in the overflow, but it is nice to have that option.
We were nervous about being able to get a site--they do not accept reservations. We came in mid-week & were able to get a great site. Campground is consistently full, so suggest not coming in on a Friday.
Good Verizon coverage. Easy to get DirecTV satellite. Very strong Wi-Fi.
We look forward to coming back! We loved the small town feeling, hope they don't change a thing. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Value rating would have been higher except no water on site, only electric. Service is a low rating (should have been zero stars simply because no attendant ever stopped at our site! It is a pretty park, right on the water and we enjoyed our neighbors. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice city park with sites well spread out and lots of grass and trees between. Crushed gravel sites and paved access roads. Pull-through sites are at the south end of each row. No water at sites, but standpipes and an artesian well on site. The showers are activated with quarters, 3 minutes per quarter with instant hot water. Close to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. No reservations so first come, first served. Kiosk at entrance has forms and envelope for payment, cash or check only. Host at site #5 can answer any questions. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed for a short time in this park and I can guarantee you we will not be back. The sites are cramped, the park is not well kept, and the camp "HOST" is about as unfriendly. We moved on to the Ashland City Park and were very pleased with the change in location. The parks dept in Washburn should seriously take a closer look at the folks who "Host" their campground. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

My husband surprised me with an overnight get-away to beautiful Lake Superior. We were fortunate to have gotten the last available campsite (they don't take reservations). The campground was clean, the neighbors were friendly, and we enjoyed a very relaxing stay. Our site was level, grassy, with mature trees. We would go back again. This park was a last minute find which turned out very nice. Lovely lake front park with big spaces between sites. Ours was a P/T but mostly back ins. Bathrooms adequate but nothing flashy. The location is great and the WiFi is very good. We would stay here again. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.
