Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in October and there was no camp host. We did not have trouble seeing the campgrounds or the signage, there is an upper and a lower. We camped in the lower. It was nearer the river and had a great view of the canyon wall. There was only one other camper, a small travel trailer.

There is nothing here in the way of hookups. We did not use the outdoor toilet. We stayed so my husband could fish the next morning. He was told by another fisherman that the key to the canyon is a red copper John fly. The water is clear and beautiful.

The stars were magnificent. We don't watch TV when we are camping and do not care about reception.

Still, it's pricey because you basically get what you would get in the national forest. But you have to put up with big trucks and the trains that come through the tunnel. One reviewer said the trucks stop at 8p.m. They do not. I was up way past 10 p.m and they just kept coming. It's not worth the price. I don't even know if anyone is collecting the fee but we paid anyway. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Motorhome.

This isn't far from Thermopolis. Try the fishing for trout. Most beautiful place to fly fish. Don't expect typical a campground.

GPS has troubles finding the correct spot. Signage is definitely an issue. We came from the north, via St Hwy 120. We passed through 3 tunnels as we approached Boysen St. Pk. Right after the 3rd tunnel is the 1st Boysen Pk campground (Lower Wind River). The sign is on the right, parallel to the road, so hard to notice. If you turn in here, it's better to approach on the left of the Boysen Pk sign for better access to the road into the Park. If you travel down (south) further a little ways you will come to the 2nd sign (Upper Wind River), also parallel to the road. This seems to be the the most scenic, with canyon views on both sides of the several campgrounds. Further south is a sign, facing the road, for 2 more campgrounds (Tamarisk & Bannan?). These appear to be not so green, very open. The Wind River sites have grass and trees and are closer to the Shoshoni River. Very helpful camp host. After Sept. 15th they don't take reservations, it's first come, first served. Upper Wind River filled by the end of the day. Level sites, with lovely views of the canyon, with a river running by the campground. They have well watered grass and trees. Only the reservable sites have been assigned numbers. We didn't reserve because it was after Labor Day. They had lots of sites filled by the end of the day, but there were still some left when we left the next day. We walked up a path toward the nearby earthen dam. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Motorhome.

There are very few signs indicating the location of the state park. It is 11 miles from the road. If you come in from Hwy 26, There is one sign indicating to turn in for the park, and it is 11 miles in. However, that road is not marked, the park is not visible until one is close to it, and the road forks to the right. Which way do you go? You can't tell, as there are no more signs of any kind. Just a desert road. Help? So... We went back, and came in the way of Shoshoni, on Hwy 20. We went many miles until there was one small sign indicating to turn left for the park. When we arrived, the park host was new to the job, and virtually no help at all. There is no water, no showers, and the tent sites appear to have minimal area for a tent. This is for survival only. Not fun. I felt ripped off at the $17 fee. The good news is that the stars at night were awesome, and there was an incredible meteor. However, I didn't stay out long because of the mosquitoes. They didn't seem to be biting, but there were sure there. There was no heavy wind during the night, as we later suffered at Buffalo Bill State Park. We lost our tents at the latter location. We were around RV folks who talked into the night, keeping me awake. No supervision by a host. I felt miserable. This is for survival only. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Tent.

Make a detailed map if possible, before heading out. The navigation to this park is horrible. Where are the signs??

We paid the out-of-state resident fee for a basic site (dry camping). There are a few campground locations for this state park, but I think the most popular are the green and shady Upper and Lower River Campgrounds. We pulled into the Lower River Campground (northernmost one) and selected a site that wasn't reserved - there seems to be plenty to choose from at the end of August, around half the sites available. We intended to only stay for 2 nights as a stopover, but since we weren't in any rush we ended up staying an entire week since the scenery was so beautiful and peaceful here. The weather was pretty hot but there are lots of shade trees to help if you pick the right site - ours was right next to the river and enjoyed the view of the water and opposing cliffs. We work online so Verizon signal is a big deal - we were barely able to get 1 bar of voice and 3G signal (sometimes LTE with our booster) but only at the very southern-most site in the campground, otherwise my phone read "no service." I believe you could probably get a little better signal at the Upper River Campground where it's a little more crowded. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There are drinking water spigots all around the park so you can fill your tanks. The only dump station is located at their headquarters office a few miles south on the highway, but it's free to dump here if you stayed at the park (no one actually checked though and doesn't look like they are too strict about it since there's no guard station or anything to monitor who is dumping). We did all our shopping back in Thermopolis.

This place is beautiful! The lake was clear, the restrooms freshly cleaned everyday, the sites are decent sized and plenty of them available, our spot had plenty of shade. Both the Ranger and the Sheriff that came by were very nice and helpful with our questions about the area. We felt very safe knowing that they were close by, because accidents happen, especially when you are camping! The lady running the marina store was also very nice and helpful. We plan to make this our new yearly trip destination!! I highly recommend this place for family vacations. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Tent.

Stayed at the Tamarask campground, which is a little rough. Rocky interior roads but nice site right on the reservoir. Pretty much had the loop to myself. When I stay at Boysen SP next time it will be on the Wind River, north of the reservoir. Looks more scenic with nicer-looking sites. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Motorhome.

I stumbled across this park. It is right on a beautiful little river, and listening to the river sounds at night while going to sleep was great. This is not a destination park, but is a very nice inexpensive sleepover place. It is on a highway, so road noises are present. There are no showers. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Right on the lake. Our first time dry camping and it was great. Opened the windows and let the breeze cool us at night. It was fine. Lots of people here with boats. It's a huge lake. Very quiet and not developed. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Motorhome.

The setting is the beautiful Wind River Canyon. The downside, for tent camping, is that they water the grass with a sprinkler system and do not warn tent campers when they are making reservations. If the campground host hadn't warned us and told us to put pots weighed down with rocks on top of the sprinkler heads (which took some searching) we would have woken up to wet tents. This is an outhouse (pit toilet) only facility, there are no showers. There are water spigots. The mosquito's were horrible this year but that seems to be an exception, due to the wet spring. There are showers in town at the hot springs, the state bath house. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Tent.

Gravel sites, we camped in the Tamarask campground. Right on the water in a desert setting! Even with antennas, our Verizon aircard and phone did not work. Great place if you are self contained. We camped at Boysen State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Boysen encompasses a large lake with several campgrounds, we stayed at the Tough Creek facility, which is about 10 mi. N. of Shoshoni on Hwy 20. Tough Creek is a minimalist-type place, no hookups, lots of room, a few trees. Only facilities are tables, BBQs, toilets and a little playground equipment for kids. Primarily, this is a campground for boaters & fishermen, but it worked well as an overnight for us. They told us it can get hot, cold and windy, but was OK when we arrived in August. This is some pretty backwoods country, podner! We camped at Boysen State Park in a Motorhome.
