Slough Creek, with only 16 sites, is a wonderful campground if you want primitive camping, away from the crowds. It is in the Northeast section of Yellowstone, at the entrance to the Lamar Valley. It has a bit of a mythical reputation. Directly on Slough Creek, and near the Lamar River, it is a first choice for both animal watchers (think wolves, bison, antelope, moose) as well as for the fisherman. Slough Creek and Lamar River are considered world class fly fishing destinations. Down a 2 1/2 mile dusty gravel road, this campground has no hookups, no generators allowed, and has many sites on the water. At least 5 sites can take a big rig, but most sites are filled with small campers or tents. Often, only 2-4 sites are available a day and these are given out around 6:30 to 7:00 am when the camp host comes out, although the current occupant doesn't have to leave until 11am. Get there by 5:30 AM or so to be sure to get a spot. The hosts are friendly, helpful, and run a tight ship, meaning don't go there to party hearty. They do their best to make it pleasant for everybody. Bison often are either on the entry road or in the campground. Bears are seen regularly depending on the time of year. For Big Rigs, site 7 is a great choice, but sites 8, 11, 12, and 1 can all take big rigs. Many other sites will take 25 to 30 foot rigs. Water is only from a hand pump and toilets are vault type, but kept very clean by the park service. Bring a full load of water and empty holding tanks. While rated a 10, this is relative to the type of campground that it is. A bonus is that this is also one of the only campgrounds that gets good cell signals and data. Verizon works best, but ATT also has a good signal. These all get hit hard during the daytime when the park is busy, so your best time is early mornings and night. Regular rate is $15 a night, with 1/2 off with a senior or access pass. We camped at Slough Creek Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Our favorite place to stay in Yellowstone. This fall they had a very friendly camp host at the site. Beautiful spot, perfect location for wildlife viewing, not crowded in October, and you may awake to bison in your yard! Have stayed here numerous times and I'm sure we'll return in 2011! We camped at Slough Creek Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Slough Creek is a beautiful campground with all camp sites on or near Slough Creek. I was in campsite 1 which was the most private of the campsites and was adjacent to a walking trail along the river. Views of mountains and slough creek are definite highlights. One drawback is the road leading into the campground is about 1 mile of gravel- so, take this into consideration. Other than the road to the campsite- it's perfectly situated for anglers and campers alike. We camped at Slough Creek Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent.

Overall Rating:

This campground is for small RV's only unfortunately. If you have one, you are in luck .There are several really nice water sites. The bathroom is just a simple vault toilet with no running water. Water is taken from the hand pump. This is a basic campground way back on a gravel road but it has great fishing and a more quiet atmosphere. One of our favorites. Good place to watch wolves too. We camped at Slough Creek Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
