This campground was a mixed bag. On the plus side, it sits right on the Black River, which is crystal clear, and has gorgeous scenery. The campground rents tubes, canoes and rafts, and will take you five miles up the river for a delightful float trip back down to the campground. The campground offers free firewood, and has limited supplies in the camp store. It is close to Johnson Shut Ins State Park, which is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon swimming. On the negative side, this is definitely a campground and not an RV resort! There are no full hookup sites, and the dump station was difficult to maneuver around, messy and smelly. Lots of shade trees make the sites awkward for large RV's. Sites were sandy. There are sites for horse campers, and if you don't have a horse, you definitely don't want to be in one of those sites! It seemed to us that most of the people camping here were repeat customers for many years, and we felt a bit out of place as "newbies". The office staff weren't overly friendly, and didn't seem to care whether they had our business or not. We enjoyed the river, but if we returned to that area, I think we would try one of the other campgrounds.

We were really disappointed in this campground. They advertise themselves as a "five star camping resort" but we noticed that several stars were definitely missing. To begin with, the office closed at 7:00 PM on Friday night Memorial Day weekend, which made check in at the nearby hotel very inconvenient. Upon check in we learned that the pool and game room were not available. Our site had pools of water from the previous day's rain. The picnic table was old, with peeling paint...practically unusable. The playground was also very old, and to get to it, you had to cut through the sites of several very junky looking seasonal campsites. I would say that 80% of the campground was seasonal campers. We spoke to the manager about the fact that we were paying "high season" rates but the park was clearly not up and running for the season. We would have felt much better had we been charged the off season rate. The manager made it clear that he didn't care whether we were happy or not. With so many seasonal campers, I guess one or two unhappy weekend campers doesn't make a dent in the profits.

This is a beautiful state park about 20 miles south of Des Moines. The lake view sites have no hookups, but we were in the first row of electric sites up from the lake, and had a great view of the lake and plenty of shade. There is a beach and covered fish dock in the park. DNR was very visible, so no wild parties going on! My only complaint was the lack of hot water in the showers.

This is a beautiful state park on the St. Clair River. If you're interested in Great Lakes shipping, you will love this campground as the ships pass by so close you can practically toss a fishing line on their decks! In the 3 days we were there, we probably saw 25 ships. Sites were large, shaded and grassy. The restrooms were clean and modern. No water or sewer, but there is a dump station. While there is a playground at the campground, there's not much else for kids to do there. Would like to return in the fall without our kids and just sit and watch the ships go by!

WOW! This is a great family resort! Kids loved the new maze/playground structure, and all the organized activities over Labor Day weekend. Sites were a bit cramped on the lower level by the ponds, but everyone around us was very friendly and considerate. The managers went out of their way to be helpful, even to the kids. Restrooms were immaculate...cleaner than mine at home! My husband liked browsing at the well-stocked store. Kids pulled lots of fish from the pond, and enjoyed the pool. This was one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever stayed at, and we will definitely be back.
