With 2009 being a lean year, I decided to take my children camping for our family vacation. As a single mother, I was a little hesitant as I had not been camping since I was a child and had no real knowledge about what to expect. A reservation was made for a creek side campsite at the Pine Flat Campground in Sedona with relative ease. Locating our assigned site was equally easy and we had a fabulous view of the creek and the mountain wall opposite our site. While the restrooms are the nasty "pit" type toilets, they were well stocked and the camp host was very helpful in providing information about the area and in keeping the campground well maintained. Our site had a picnic table, fire pit and BBQ (charcoal) grill and there was water available from a spigot close by. The only down side of our trip was the nightly visit from the skunks! Each night/early morning, they could be heard attempting to break into our food boxes (large plastic bins with lids) and rummaging around the site. They provided a great source of entertainment for my children but not so much for me. Beyond that, the trip was wonderful because the facility was beautiful.
My sister and I took our (combined) four children to Buckskin Mountain State Park for fall break. We tent camped in one of the cabanas right on the river and the children had a great time! The park is clean and relatively quiet and the people are very friendly. The store was open for some last minute grocery shopping and the restroom/shower facilities were reasonably clean. The only draw back was the louder weekend crowd (mostly college age) who apparently forgot the good manners their parents taught them. Beyond that, our overall experience was very pleasant and we are definitely returning for additional camping trips. Two thumbs up!!
