This was our 4th year in a row visiting this park and we already have reservations for next summer. The biggest driver in rating this park is it's pristine location on the ocean. The entire island is state owned and as such has not been commercialized. With that said, this is a very old campground in need of work. The bathhouses are in need of renovation and are very damp and musty. The campground hosts and staff do a very good job of cleaning, but there is only so much they can do. As others have posted here, the sites are not paved but overall are pretty level. For larger campers and RV's bring wide leveling blocks as the sand/ground is soft. Both the deer and raccoons are very friendly. The deer will eat from your hand and the raccoons will eat anything they can get to, so secure your site when you leave or go to bed. Please don't let my rating of an "8" scare you away. This is a great campground with an uncertain future. Every year the ocean reclaims part of this campground. Visit it now while you can. In these economic times it may be a while before the state can step in and renourish the beach.

Stayed on site #9 over Labor Day weekend. This is one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever visited. The site was very deep and afforded plenty of room for our 46 foot motorhome and the SUV that we toad. The way the sites are staggered along the ridge you do not feel as though you are too close to your neighbor. The views are incredible and the campground is incredibly clean and well kept. The bathhouse is the best we have experienced, private and cleaned regularly. Unlike a few of the earlier postings on this website, I found all of the employees willing to go out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. Very short commute into Asheville. We will be returning to visit again soon!
