Very nice quiet Corp of Engineers park on Steinhagen Lake 7 miles West of Jasper. Many locals use the park on weekends, with more spaces available during the week. Lake is quite shallow, with many turtles and alligators(!) Gators were shy and not a problem at all. Bird watcher's paradise, with wood ducks, bald eagles, bluebirds, roadrunners and woodpeckers. Only minus was numerous flooded low spots during rainy weather.
Corp of Engineers park on the SE part of Sam Rayburn Reservoir. There are two sections; one is 30 amp that's open year round, and a 50 amp section that opens April 1. There is much fishing activity, with many day visitors using the boat ramp and weekend fishing contests. Sites are paved and not too close, some shaded. One oddity is that all are surrounded by iron pipe railings that can make parking difficult, and interfere with slide outs on some sites. Swimming beach is available. Verizon cell service works reasonably well here and at Twin Dikes nearby. City of Jasper is 17 miles South.
Typically nice COE park. Rates went up as of Jan 1 2009 by $2, ($1 for seniors). I had hoped for more choices of sites, but it was pretty full for early April. Cell modem service is good via Alltel which Verizon considers part of its "extended" network. Very friendly and helpful park hosts.
