This State Park is a hidden jewel. It is nestled in a sandstone valley 200 feet below the surrounding farmland. The park is densely forested and the step terrain makes for some interesting and challenging hiking. Near the campground is a boat ramp that provides access to the Des Moines River which runs through the park. That gave us easy access to the river for a beautiful kayak trip through the valley. The campground was very clean with newly constructed restrooms and showers. Many of the campsites were shaded on level but small sites. My only complaint is that some of the shaded sites where dirt which soon turned to mud after an overnight rain shower. Our 10 and 14 year old sons took advantage of the ice cream truck that came through the park twice each day. Our cell phones could not receive a signal in the park valley but who needs a phone when you're camping.
This place is a blast from the past. The roller rink is the center of activity in the evenings. Our family opened and closed the roller rink both nights we were there. It is first come first serve, however, that was not a problem for us. We arived at 8:00 PM on a Friday night and had our pick of many good sites.
Good fishing lake with very clear water. The campground is family friendly and has a playground. The bathrooms are very clean. There is a 7 mile wooded hiking trail around the perimeter of the lake. The park also has a nice swimming beach with a bathhouse, restaurant and boat rental. Many of the sites are not level. If you reserve on the Iowa DNR site it will indicate if the site is level or not. We would go there again.
Nice family friendly State Park. Self reservation is first come first serve. There is a lot to explore on the hiking & biking trails. Nice sand beach, good fishing and boat rentals. Many camp sites are close to the water and all seem to have shade.
Loved this place. My wife and two boys spent a week here and found plenty to keep us entertained. The buffet in the lodge is a must and a good break from camp food. Activities inclueded SAC Air Museum tour, drive through safari, water park, horse back riding, giant indoor playgroung with climbing tubes and ball pits, mini golf, outdoor plays, and an activity center. The natural beauty was breath taking. I recommend climbing the overlook tower at sunset to take in a view of the Platte River Valley.
