Chesapeake Campground is a good location for exploring the south side of Hampton Roads, but that's about it. The bathrooms are old but clean. My wife said while using the bathroom a frog hopped out of the side of the wall and across her feet, but other than that she had no complaints. The campground has a lot of permanent campers who live there year-round, making it feel like it's more of a trailer park vs a campground. If you're looking for scenery I wouldn't go there, but as a base it's o.k.
We stayed here for 3 days during the first full week of April. The bathrooms were new, but were not cleaned daily. My wife complained of horrible water pressure in the lady's showers. The men's showers were okay with water pressure. The toilets seemed to not be cleaned daily. The fixtures in the restrooms seem new and there is ceramic tile in them, making them look nice. The overall campgroud was very well kept. The location to Folly Beach and downtown Charleston are big drawing points. Our dog had a good time at the off leash dog park located about a mile from the campground. The 7 I'm giving is due to the restrooms. The gnats at the park are horrible! This of course is not the campground's fault, but even 100% DEET didn't deter them. I would not recommend going in April!
Our 5th time here at this campground. Our dog loves it! We stayed over Easter and the dogs had an Easter egg hut Easter morning. The campground has the cleanest restrooms I have ever seen. We fully intend on returning again!
Very nice park. This was our 4th time at this campground and we intend on returning. The park rangers do a spectacular job keeping the restrooms clean. The walk to the beach isn't far at all. You can hear the ocean from your site at night.
This was our 3rd visit to Huntington Beach SP and will be our last! Our site was next to a marsh, which made mosquitos pretty bad. That isn't the park's fault. My score comes primarily from the filthy bathrooms! On both days we were there the bathrooms hadn't been cleaned. There was water and grass everywhere, human waste stains in the toilets, and the showers were full of mold. This place needed an overhaul. We will not be returning!
We've stayed here 3 times this summer...once in July and twice in August. The campground's elevation of 3600 ft (according my my GPS) provides a refreshing relief from the heat of the Carolina coastal plain where we live. The first 2 experiences were absolutely perfect; the 3rd was less than desirable. During our first 2 visits we had a pop-up site across from the tent campers. These sites are very level and have good wifi reception. My only issue with this site was the proximity of other sites. The utility hookups for your fellow camper are beside your picnic table, which was weird, but the actual sites were okay. There were plenty of shady sites. On the 3rd visit we had a different site near the cabins. This site was the most unlevel site we've ever used! Part of the problem was that it was raining and had been raining all day. My tires spun out trying to get the camper as level as I could. This isn't KOA's fault, but better roads may make it easier for campers. The staff is superb. On the 2nd visit I was trying to take the water hose off and I broke the spicket, causing a white water wave to go all over the place! The KOA had to shut off water to 1/2 the campground to replace the spicket! I was expecting attitude and a big bill, but they fixed it for free, told me it wasn't a big deal, and ended up giving me a water splicer to replace the one I broke accidently! We love this campground...we just don't want the last site we had again! Very close to Boone. If you want to stay close to town, this is definitely a nice place to be!
Very nice park located about 15 miles from Elizabeth City. They are still fixing up the campground currently, but you can tell the owners have done a lot of work. The campground is clean, the restrooms smell new, and this was the most level site I have ever used! I definitely plan on returning again!
The campground is secluded off of hwy 105 near Boone. You can barely hear vehicles, and the stream adds a nice touch. The sites are very close together, but the campers there when we camped were nice. The bathrooms were horrible! The men's room reaked of cigarette smoke, had toilet paper rolls all over the floor, and the showers were full of mold. The bathhouse needed a major shakedown for cleanliness. We will not return until the restrooms and bathhouses are cleaned and overhauled.
Excellent campground! It has the cleanest restrooms and bathhouses I have ever seen. The fields for dogs to run in were in great shape. My only complaint is the dog pond for dogs to swim in. The owners said it was fed by 3 nearby springs, but it was quite muddy and I didn't feel comfortable allowing my dog to swim in it. This is definitely a place you should check out.
