We just returned from a 4-night stay at Moonshine Creek. If you are looking for a peaceful, out of the way campground with full hook-ups then this is the place you're looking for. We stayed in site 20A which is RIGHT ON THE CREEK, as are so many of the sites. That's just what we were looking for as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing more soothing than running water or crashing surf and I don't feel like I've been on vacation without one or the other. The campground is very well maintained. The staff are very professional and helpful. The bathhouse and laundry are clean, and they even offer books/magazines/puzzles for loan or trade. There is a good variety of sites for tents and RV's, and lots of good walking. If you have kids who demand video games, a pool, a large playground, then stay somewhere else. Do make sure you come with a well-stocked pantry if you're staying for more than a couple of nights. The "Mini Mart" is sufficient but doesn't offer a great variety of goods. About 7 miles to Waynesville & the nearest store. We will definitely be back. I believe Moonshine Creek was made just for me. This place is wonderful!

This is a beautiful campground, but being a KOA is pricey. However, the river sites are worth it. There are two kinds of river sites: ones with full hookups and a deck above the river; and ones with water & electric right on the river. The w/e river sites are where we stay. In some of them you can just about step out of your camper right into the river. Same goes for non-river sites: The full hookup sites are smaller & closer together, and then water & electric sites & tent sites are much bigger and more private. As I said, this really is a beautiful campground. There is a park-like area by the river with benches and swings that is so peaceful and relaxing. The bathhouses are sparkling clean. Smoky Mountain Heritage Center is across the street, and is definitely worth a visit. Through the summer and into the fall there are concerts there on Friday evenings. Park is well maintained, by all those folks in yellow shirts puttering around on their golfcarts! Ubiquitous but unobtrusive. We live 15 miles away and come here and to Lazy Daze often. We prefer Lazy Daze for frequent short stays because it's cheaper, but you just can't beat Townsend KOA sites on the river when we really want to feel like we've been far away from home and get into the zone, as we call it. Yes, we know how lucky we are!

Lazy Daze is our weekend vacation home. We live just about 15 miles away and come here all the time for a quick getaway to Townsend and the Smokies. This is such a clean, friendly park, and as crowded as it might get, it's never loud or obnoxious. Whenever we've been here, all the campers respect quiet hours. Clean bathhouses and clean pool. The sites are close together, but then this is not primitive back country camping! Every site is shaded, and an extra bonus is the ice cream and burger stand next door.
