Beautiful park. The views of the lake are amazing. It is a great oasis in the desert. Be sure to make a stop at the visitor center to learn more about the area. The sites are paved and level. We had no problems getting into our site.
If you want to see Canyon de Chelly, stay at the free NPS campground. If you want to experience Canyon de Chelly, stay at Spider Rock. It is an experience. The silence is amazing. Bring your generator. Fill your fresh water supply. Then prepare yourself for an adventure. When you first pull in the campground looks deserted and junky. The roads are rutted. But, you need to look past that. It is an amazing and magical place to stay. Make sure to hike on the walking trail. The closer you get to the canyon, the more silent the world becomes. Howard is super nice and an incredible host.
Keep driving. This place is a dump. Almost all of the sites are permanent or seasonal campers. The septic was full for our full hook up site--if you can call it a site. They sent a school bus equipped with a sewer pump and tank to pump out the septic--now that is a pleasant smell after dinner--Yuck! There are more golf carts than teeth in this campground. Keep driving--even if you are tired!
