This is a great park. Nice level concrete pads. Some sites just a very short walk across the dune to the ocean. It is windy all the time but this helps keep it comfortable in the summer heat. The OBX is always windy! There is sand, it is the beach after all, and there are sand spurs. Some have commented about sand and water in the bathhouses. We seldom use them, but I feel they are quite clean given the locations so close to the ocean. Everyone who goes in there is covered in sand and wet. Anyone who has weathered a Hatteras storm can appreciate the amount of work it takes to keep structures such as these standing so close to the ocean! It is ocean front so facilities take a beating, but the crew there is always working to keep it clean and fixed. Outdoor pool nice, we have never thought it to be too cold. Indoor pool gets a bit "icky" at times as it never sees the sun. WiFi is free, but spotty availability always. I go every year and the WiFi has not worked well yet.The park is pricey but mostly worth it. It is the best on Hatteras Island. The value of the real estate it sits on just keeps going up and the property could produce more revenue as a condo resort, so I am willing to pay up to keep it operating as a campground. Clean, well maintained oceanfront sites, good staff. One of our favorite campgrounds.

I stayed in Camp Chautauqua twice this summer. This was our first year visiting there. Reading the other reviews, I see a very mixed bag. It was our experience that the camp sites here were some of the biggest we have ever stayed in. Our last stay we were in a site around site 95. It was huge as was our neighbor's site who had room for a boat. We had room for two cars and our unit. Much of the park is heavily wooded. Really nice. Except for the executive sites the pads are not concrete but are just gravel, not a real negative in a place like this. There are a great many seasonal sites and there is sort of a club atmosphere around the seasonals, they tend to hang together in groups. This did not bother us at all. The pool was lake front, clean and guarded. There are boat docks available, a feature that we used. There is a pavilion serving meals, and ice cream in the camp store. The park is kept clean. Ii is usually, but not always, quiet. We have had some issues with loud music in the early evening and daytime, but never at night. The animal park is cool. A couple of caveats. If you are new to the park and arrive at night. Good like finding your space and getting backed in or pulled through. They need to escort folks to their site as the layout is a bit hard to discern at first. Though things are currently in good shape, some of the recent repairs and other work lack professionalism. This could drive the conditions there negatively if it continues over time. Summary: A very nice place to stay, especially if you bring a boat. State park like wooded sites in part of the park. A little noise control in the evening would help. Sewage availability needs to be expanded, watch that the park does not become neglected in the future.

I have been camping since 1976 and this is one of the nicest campgrounds I have ever stayed in. I have stayed there about five times in the last six years. The facilities are very good but the staff is what makes it great. They are under new management in the last few years and the change has turned a good campground into a great one. We arrived with two vehicles, Myself driving the truck towing our camper, and my wife with her SUV towing our boat. The staff helps you back in and get lined up in your site. While the owner was helping me back in, a couple of other staffers led my wife over to the over flow parking and coached her to back the boat into a parking space. My wife can handle a trailer well going forward but can not back a trailer, at all. I was impressed with their patience. This was a Friday night in high season, during the rush. A large number of campers arrived at the same time. But the staff still found time to deliver that kind of service to us! The park and facilities are spotless, the sites are smaller than some but the park is kept quiet and orderly so we never feel like we lack privacy. The pond actually has fish in it. The pedal cars are a hoot for the kids. There are some new premier sites with a patio, patio furniture, and a high end fire place. I wish there were more of these. If you are in a tent, this place has some beautiful rustic wooded sites. The park is close to so many things to do and see to list here. Many of the sites are being upgraded at this time, more gravel, sewage added and so on. The park improves every time I visit. The only even remotely negative comment I could make is that the pool is a bit small. But it is never that crowded anyway and that makes it a non issue. Great service, friendly people, spotless and quiet at night.
