We really liked the park, close to I-40 and yet very quiet. They had a really nice gift shop and the owner could not have been friendlier. We were there on the last night for their seasonal barbeques, which was really good. We would definitely return.
This was a beautiful state park. The sites are so spacious. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, especially as the sun is setting. I never saw such a stunning color display. They do lock the gates at night, it is very secure and quiet.
The very best part of this park is the landscaping surrounding the pools and hot tub. Very well done and so relaxing. Also, the staff were very pleasant and eager to help. That includes the gift shop staff, also. The cites are narrow, but level, and we really did not spend a lot of time sitting at our site. It is a busy place and I would not stay in the first row on the south side of the pools. There was too much traffic noise. One row back would have been much better. It was a little pricey, but worth it. Would definitely return.
We stopped overnight during a road trip out west. The camp is easy to find, not too far off of the interstate. The office staff was very friendly, and we had no problem with pulling into our site. The restrooms were very clean. During the overnight, my husband had a medical emergency, which thankfully turned out well. I cannot say enough about the genuine concern of the camp host and the emergency squads. The campground is about 20 minutes west of Des Moines and it definitely has a small town community feel to it.
