We couldn't wait to get to Montebello after reading all of the wonderful reviews. What we found was a mixed bag. The store is as described; clean, cute, well-stocked, and picturesque. Employees are plentious. First, please note that you must climb mountainous roads to get into the campground. They are pretty, but steep and curvy...so just be careful. The campground is across the street from the store. I only saw one employee enter the campground on Sunday evening to collect trash. They seem to hang out at the store. The bathrooms were not cleaned the entire time we were there. The men's restroom was great, but the ladies' was terrible. The playground is small and quite a distance from the sites. Someone has spent some money on some landscaping. That's nice. Wish they would spend some on things you need in the campground. The sites themselves need some work. Most sites have very little gravel and are unlevel. The campground roads need to have more gravel and some work done. Our site's road was full of huge ruts. There is a brand spankin new barn facility behind the store that is gorgeous. Just wish they had spent more money on grain and hay. So, you can trail ride on their horses because they're safe because they're so weak from being underfed. Does this make sense? I think this place was once beautiful. I think the funds are not going back into the campground. It is a shame. I would return if they'd improve the sites and totally revamped the entire campground. I wish they would feed the horses more and not offer the trail rides. I'd rather see them well fed and happy.
It is a small, but pretty campground. Things are kept very clean here. They have plenty of activities for all ages, and there is live music every Saturday night. Only problem I really saw was the restrooms. There are only two stalls available for women and two stalls for men. The same goes for the showers. There is another bath house with one more shower for men and one more for women, but only the three cabins are allowed the use of those facilities. If they will add another bath house with three stalls each, I would rate this one much higher. If you have your own facilities, then this wouldn't be an issue for you. But for those of us in popups and tents, it is an issue.
The swimming lake is very clean. They need to watch for people bringing in alcohol in concealed containers to the beach area. Plenty of employees to help with activities etc... Our bathhouse had NO hot water in the ladies section for over 24 hours...Definite downside. Hope they get that fixed. Lots of activities for the kids etc...well managed and clean. We will be back in August.
First, the good: Kids of all ages will love it here - from toddler through teens. Go carts a short distance from campground, as well as par 3 golf. Campground amenities include the bomb of all game rooms (huge arcade, batting cages, indoor miniature golf, and play area for toddlers and preschoolers); basketball court, horse shoes, volleyball area; and swimming pool with slide. All of these things are in wonderful condition. We first visited here in 2002 under the previous owners and then it needed updating. The new owners are doing just that and everything looks good. The bathrooms are clean (although, one more bath house would be nice). So, why not a perfect 10? The full hookup sites are really small and I mean small. Really, I think it would be better to put two sites into one and then they would be average size. True, they wouldn't be able to accommodate as many campers, but the campers would not feel like sardines. The employees were quite friendly and helpful. Even though we camped over a holiday and the campground was packed, everyone completely behaved and kept up with their pets. Yes, we will go back, but during a less crowded weekend.
If you are looking for planned activities, this is not the place. If you are looking for a pristine campground, level and large sites, clean bathrooms, then you have found it. We are definitely going back next year. These people no how to lay a campground out and there was no crowding of sites. Only reason I did not give it a full 10, they need one more bath house.
We loved the horseback tour, even though it is very pricey. The campground itself is very nice and the playground is awesome. The staff was very helpful and we enjoyed the diorama. We learned so much! Although I didn't care for our particular site, we will go back. The sites are VERY small, so that is what kept me from rating it a 10.
Well, unlike the previous poster, I did not appreciate the fact that this campground had people coming in at ALL times throughout the night (think, pop up people pulling in at 3:00 a.m. and setting up not even trying to do it quietly). Our site was a joke. Sure, we had some shade but the site was on an open hillside and it took us an hour to get somewhat level. I put that the bathrooms were clean, meaning that they were cleaned on a daily basis. However, someone needs to get in there and do a detail job, (think baseboards with some mold etc...) They have so many employees, that the bathroom jobs should be a no brainer. Yes, you will find the employees running around on golf carts checking for I have no idea what...and you will have a departure notice left on your windshield. The one nice thing about this campground is their miniature golf which is really quite pretty and enchanting. We will try another campground the next time we are visiting Hershey. There are scores to choose from in the area.
The park is neatly organized and in good condition as far as camp sites go. Most of the sites on the river seem to be for dry camping. We were given a more spacious spot on the top of the hill. Almost all of the sites are shaded. The weekend we went, the campground was completely booked. However, there was plenty of staff to help with the crowd. I did feel the lady cleaning the restrooms should have had about three more people helping her and they should have been cleaned three times a day due to the sheer volume of use. Perhaps this campground just needs another bath house. We all enjoyed the activities and with the exception of keeping dogs on a leash and cleaning up after their mess, most of the campers seemed to follow the rules. Had their been another bath house or cleaning done more often, I would have rated it higher. The bathrooms weren't atrocious, the cleaning lady just needed a little more help to keep up. We will go back.
