This was the first weekend the campground was open to the public. The pool wasn't open and nothing was going on around the campground. The playground is pretty small. The restrooms and showers were the best I've seen in a while. There are creek side sites which is nice to throw out a few random casts throughout the day. We didn't catch anything. Very rural feel, but very close to shopping/dinning etc.

We had 5 tents and 2 pop-ups (13 adults, 9 kids, 5 dogs) on 3 sites (A23, 24, 25). It was great to have a primitive site next to our electric/water sites. Those sites are gravel and fairly level, shady, with a little creek for the kids to play in. We hiked from the Natural Bridge back to the campsite with kids in tow with no problem. It’s about 0.5 mile to the pool and 0.5 mi further to the top on the bridge. It’s an easy hike to the Whittleton arch (1.0 mile) from the back of the camp ground. Most importantly, everyone had hot water during showers. The bath house facilities are nice and well maintained. I wish there was some play ground equipment. We hit some fantastic weekend weather too.

Carter Caves State Park is very nice. There are plenty of activities for the whole family. There is hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, mini golf, evening activities at the campgrounds, and don’t forget the caves! This is why you go; not solely for the camp ground experience. Many sites are small with the table and fire ring at the back of the site versus the side where your camper faces. I put off purchasing a 30 amp extension cord until it was too late. The electrical box didn’t have the typical duplex outlet either so I couldn’t plug an adapter in for the night. We had to drive to Boyd County (1.5+ hour round trip) to find a Walmart. The bath house facility is average for a state park. I took two showers with lukewarm water. All in all, not terrible. We will camp here again.

The Kentucky Horse Park Campground will spoil you. The grounds are clean, the sites are spacious, the showers are in great conditions, the camp store is well stocked, and the pool is nice but average. Often there is free entertainment on the grounds but other than riding bikes around the grounds, there is not much to do in my opinion. I live in central Kentucky and am not a big horse fan, so we just sit around and relax all weekend watching our 5 year old enjoy the park.
