We had sites 7, 8 and 9. We loved them all. They had a nice gentle slope down to the lake. The lake was more "sandy" than in many areas on Lake Hartwell which it made it much nicer to enjoy. The sites are very large and shaded. Our boat was easily visible from the campsite. The playground close to us was only swings, but very convenient. The bath house was very clean but very far away. We had to drive to it from our sites. Location is not very close to any dining on the water. Took us over an hour to get to Swamp Guinea by water. It is much closer by land though. Overall we loved this place and will definitely go back again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

This is my second review of Paynes Creek. I have to drastically cut my rating because we got stuck in our campsite due to the steep driveways into and out of the campsites, spinning tires on the gravel. Thankfully our site was attached to the next site and those folks were leaving when we were, so we were able to follow them through their campsite. The only site we will be getting again, will be site #7, which has a long flat sweeping driveway in and out of the site. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

We enjoyed our stay at Paynes Creek! The campground hosts were very friendly. We stayed on site 30. We were originally staying on site 31 and they had no problem allowing us to switch to 30 because it was more shaded. They also were helpful and let us borrow a tool when we had a problem with our camper. The campground was what I expected from a COE campground-clean, lots of trees, and shady roomy sites. Almost every site is on the water. If you need a Walmart or restaurants there are plenty in a town about 15 minutes away. We would stay again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Another of the excellent COE campgrounds on Lake Hartwell. This campground was smaller than the others I have reviewed here. The bath houses were clean but oddly placed with 1 of them not really near any camping area. Only 1 dump station so it was a wait today and oddly the dumpsters are not at the dump station so required 2 stops before leaving. Most of the sites would required you pre-check the sites to make sure you can access the site with your rig because some of the sites are tight turns and almost all sites had steep entrances and exits to the sites which puts you closer to the water. We camped on site #12 and it was really good (32' trailer) with immediate lake access and million dollar views (no trees between trailer and water). We will be returning Labor Day weekend. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

One of several U. S. Corps of Engineers properties resting on the shores of 55,000 acre-plus Hartwell Lake. Thoughtfully designed and very well maintained. A highly regarded campgrounds directory awarded Payne's Creek five stars for beauty, spaciousness, site privacy and security, has gated approach, and they were right. We were in site 21 and could just barely see our neighbors. Daytime noise, not objectionable, mostly from Ski-Doos skimming the lake's surface. At night-- very quiet. Our fourth weekend outing this year, 2007 and Payne's Creek turned out to be the top campground of our travels. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.

This is our favorite campground in Georgia, so far. It’s only about a 2-hour drive north of Atlanta, out in the boonies and nicely secluded. Most sights are right on the water, lots of shade trees, very quiet and relaxing. Golf Carts, ATVs, and motorized scooters are prohibited. Camp hosts were very accommodating and shower house was very clean. Interior roads are paved, campsites are large and quite level graveled; each has a nice picnic table and grill. Great place for fishing! We camped here in a Motorhome.
